1. Your team has a 3rd and 11 and the QB steps back and throws 5 yd pass because he does not want to get hit and then the receiver gets tackled immediately and your team has to punt the ball

2. Your team is on defense and need a stop on 3rd and 12 and the QB throws a long pass and the referee waits to see if the pass is completed first and when it's incomplete he throws a flag and that team gets a new set of downs and your defense has to stay on the field longer

Is this what causes blood pressure to rise during a NFL game?

If I was a quarterback and needed 11 yards for a first down and my receivers only ran a 5 yard route, I would take off running for the 1st down.

You would have to take off running, it would make more sense to buy time and move around in the pocket so a receiver can get beyond the 1st down marker
