Nodsmiley My Conversation With a Teenager

Yesterday I went to Goodwill and bought a few 45 RPM records and when I got to the register the teenage cashier questioned me about them.

Her: What are these things?

Me: Records or more specifically, 45 RPM records.

Her: 45 RPM?

Me: 45 revolutions per-minute.

Her: Do they still work?

Me: Yes but maybe not as well since there are a few scratches.

Her: How do they work?

Me: I could show you if you had a turntable in the store.

Her: What's a turntable?

Me: You've never seen a turntable?

Her: I probably have but I'm not sure.

Me: It's used to play records.

Her: But how do you get the sound out of the record?

Me: With a stylus.

Her? A stylus?

Me: Some people call it a needle.

Her: Like a sewing needle?

Me: Lord no!

Her: Ok, your total is $10.75.

Me: Thanks, I've got to get going and other customers are coming this way. If you have anymore questions just ask your father. On second thought, make that your grandfather.

Sometimes it feels like we're in the Twilight Zone.

It just goes to show you how quickly time moves on. I am sure there are many kids today that wouldn't even know what a cassette is. On the other hand, I know there are young people out there who do know what records are as well as record players. I'm 25 and have all of my parents 60's and 70's records as well as a record player to play them on. Records do seem to be making a bit of a comeback, because in addition to my parents classic records, I also have three Lady Gaga records and one each of Florence and the Machine, The Fray, and Coldplay. I've also notice that on the late night talk shows when introducing a band, many hosts hold up a record instead of a CD.

Getting back to situations that make you feel old, last year I substitute teached in a Pre-K classroom towards the end of school and as a class treat they watched The Little Mermaid on VHS. At the end of the movie, the teacher pushed rewind and as the tape was making it's classic screeching rewinding sound, one of the kids said, "What's that noise?" LOL!

Oh my I bet she made feel a little old. Technology certainly has changed since I was a teenager.

lol, I know how that is. Whenever my sister hears about someone from the 80's who is famous her first question to me is, "Are they dead?" I have tried explaining to her that the 80's weren't that long ago. To her that seems like a life time ago because she was born in 1992.
