Default R.I.P PHYLLIS DILLER (1917-2012)

PHYLLIS DILLER DEAD AT 95:PIONEERING TV COMEDIENNE PASSES AWAY AT LOS ANGLES HOME

Rubber-face Diller co-starred in 23 TV specials with Bob Hope, Had own popular tv show

From NY DAILY NEWS:

"Phyllis Diller, who kicked down the doors for a generation of women comedians by creating one of America's first desperate housewives, died yesterday at her Los Angeles home. She was 95.

She Had been living at home in hospice care. She had a heart attack in 1999 and TMZ reports she recently suffered a serious fall.

Diller made her reputation as a standup comedienne who costarred in 23 TV specials with Bob Hope and later had her pwn ABC show.

Joan Rivers, among others, has noted she did this at a time when the comedy field, unlike today, was male-dominated.

Diller created a character with a bizarre wardrobe, a disturbing laugh, a rubber face amd a jaded view of life, love, motherhood and almost everything else.

She reffered to her husband as "Fang," but made herself the primary target of her jokes, with endless wisecracks about her intelligence and appearance.

One of her famous lines had her chasing down a garbage truck and asking the driver before if she was too late.

No, he replied. Jump right in.

While she combined stage elements from numerous other female comics, from Lucille Ball to Minnie Pearl, Diller carved her own persona. She was often earthier. and she titled from 2005 autobiography "Like a Lampshade in a Whorehouse."

Off-stage, she has a number of other sides. She was an accomplished painist who for a time considered a career in music rather than comedy.

She appeared for three months in "Hello Dolly" on Broadway im 1969, and she voiced many animated productions, including "Scooby Doo" and "A Bug's Life" where she also sang.

Born Phyllis Driver in Lima, Ohio, she was a late starter in show biz.

She was a housewife, mother and advertising copywriter through the 1940s and didn't start until she was in her 30s.

Her first job on radio, at KROW in Oakland, and her first TV gig was a 15-minute show called "Phyllis Diller, the Homely Friendmaker."

She started her standup career at the famed Purple Onion in 1955, and eventually recorded five record albums.

She also became midly famous for her plastic surgery. which she undertook starting at 55. She said she had 15 different procedures, and was the subject of a "20/20" report in 1993.

She was married to Sherwood Diller, woth whom she had six children, and Warde Donovan. Both ended in divorce.

Fang, she said, was not based on either."

share your memories, thoughts, stories, heck even Youtube uploads on this thread about this funny lady from the past by your kind and wonderful comments down below this thread. THANK YOU!

Later!

I remember her as a kid on the Tonight Show and Bob Hope specials (and guest starring with Scooby Doo!). Always made me laugh. Someone much younger asked me about her today and I described her as "kind of an early Roseanne."

Phyllis Diller made her TV debut as a contestant on You Bet Your Life. She made a number of game show appearances since then, including the episode of the 80s incarnation of Crosswits where she celebrated her birthday.

She was a pioneer in female comedy, putting the domestic in domestic goddess before Roseanne. May she rest in peace.
