Default I Love Lucy Seasons Re-Release

Seasons 1-4 of I Love Lucy are being re-released October 14th. I imagine they'll be in slimmer cases, like The Lucy Show.

I looked at the page and it said "Number of discs: 6 ".
The first season is 7 discs, I wonder if they will take out stuff on this re-release (pilot episode, flubs, original openings, My Favorite Husband radio episodes).

As for the cover, I like the look of the original releases of the season sets instead.

But did you see the close-up of the season 1 re-release cover? Look at the label on the Vitametavegamin bottle. "Children - 3 teaspoons 4 times a day"? Your kid wiil be drunk by the end of the day taking this stuff!

I'm thinking they'll have everything on the 6 discs. If any material is taken out of any seasons, I'll stick with the originals.

Good observation on the Vitametavegamin bottle! That's hilarious!

I know, I wish they kept the same artwork.

The re-remastered version of season 1 that's included in the complete series set is only 6 discs, so I imagine it will be those versions on this new set. And that's good in a way.

I had a copy of the original season 1 set. My local library got a copy of the complete series set, which was supposed to have new digitally remastered versions of the season 1 episodes... so I checked it out from the library to compare. The new versions blow away the older ones in terms of quality. So to those who bought the season sets instead of the complete series, depending on price, this may actually be a worthwhile upgrade.

I've never seen the original 9-disc version of S1 that was initially released in volumes way back in 2001-02. But I'm led to believe that a couple discs in the 7-disc 2005 re-release were carried over from that. I say this because there are only 4 eps on those discs, the DVD layout is slightly different, and they are only single layer DVDs. Really strange how they did that but I doubt hardly anyone noticed. 6 discs that use all their data potential instead of 7 with a couple filled to half capacity actually makes more sense from a technical and economic standpoint. I wouldn't be overly concerned with S1 getting the shaft on material. Snowpeck is probably right - they are most likely the same versions used for the complete series set.

This is a proper re-release that doesn't reek of corporate greed like many re-releases do. With the first day price at a measly $14.99, it's obvious the main reason CBS/Paramount is doing this is to keep the packaging more economical and in-line with their current titles. I'm a little surprised though - I figured the next release of this show would be bluray. I Love Lucy can certainly sell enough to warrant a bluray (one of the few classic shows that can) and there are already a lot of episodes in HD on iTunes and Amazon Instant Video.

The cover art is terrible

So, why should I buy these? I mean, the last issue, especially the complete series set, looks pretty darn good to me.

There's no real reason to buy these new sets... you can usually find the Complete Series set for under $100... and the prices for all of these new individual sets add up to just over $100. Plus you get the "I Love Lucy the Movie" bonus disc in the complete series.

Default I Was One of Those...

who got S1 in the big pack (nine individual volumes packaged together)- you can imagine how P'O'ed I was when they released it in the much-cheaper slimmer packaging, like the other seasons.

I don't see much of a need to pick up the new releases.

You owned that 9-disc monster? Tell me, did you end up keeping it or selling it and opting for the slimmer 2005 re-release?

I saw these at Walmart today. They look like space savers but the cover art is awful, imo.

I picked up Seasons 1-6 at Target today. I'm holding off on the TLDCH, as they're supposed to re-release that again next year with better prints.

I didn't like the cover art at first, but when I actually saw them on the shelf, it seemed they were more appealing than I thought. The best part though is that they take up half the shelf space than the older releases.

The new season 1 set is the newly remastered episodes done for the complete series set also. The old 9-volume set looks horrible in comparison-- dark and blurry.

And two new features from that old set:

The lost pilot has been remastered and restored, and the On-set Color "Home Movies", are new!
