Thought Mary Tyler Moore Reveals What She Does On A Daily Basis Just to Stay Alive

You need the skills of a mathematician, a physician, a personal trainer and a dietitian to successfully treat and live with type 1 diabetes, says Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) celebrity spokesperson Mary Tyler Moore.

"We need to be constantly factoring and adjusting, making frequent finger sticks to check blood sugars, and giving ourselves multiple daily insulin injections just to stay alive," said Moore on the JDRF website.

Moore is one of three million Americans who has or may have type 1 diabetes, according to JDRF. Each year, more than 150,000 children and 15,000 adults -- about 80 people per day -- are diagnosed with the disease, according to JDRF.

I completely agree with her first statement. I had a friend who has type 1 diabetes and we would have to stop what ever we were doing so he could stick his finger and check his blood and then if we were going out to eat we would have to tell him in advance so he would know what type of food there would be and any adjustments to his diet he would have to make. He would have to make sure to take his insulin with him. A lot of planning and attention to details.

Such a blessing she was able to be at both The SAG Awards, to receive her Lifetime Achievement Award, and Betty White's 90th Birthday celebration, recently.

I went on the Dick Van Dyke board and asked the question if Dick Van Dyke or Mary Tyler Moore

Dick Van Dyke made his alcoholism public, and (I believe) is active with Alcoholics Anonymous. I will say that in public because DVD did. From what I have read from more than one source that Mary Tyler Moore was also a partier at least and had troubles with alcohol. It was the Mad Men era.

When was she diagnosed with diabetes? I looked on Google with no help. Her Wiki article also does not state this.

Also, how did a young woman who was physically in shape her whole life (Mary always had a nice body) get diabetes? Sometimes diabetes can cure itself by proper diet and losing weight and not drinking. Some have diabetes because they are 100 pounds overweight and drink alcohol, like me!

I saw this online that when DVD show was on that she was an addicted smoker. She tried to quit and was going nuts (this again was the early 1960's when 60% of adults at least smoked.). Finally, the actors went "Mary, have a f****** cigarette. Go now!" And she went out of the studio and had a smoke. I think she eventually kicked the smoking habit. I say mostly because one does not completely quit smoking. I smoke, but I am nt a chain smoker. I smoke when I drink, I smoke when I am stressed out and I have a smoke sometimes when I wake up. I pack lasts me about three days sober. It is very difficult to completely stop smoking. Nicotine can be apowerful drug.

To me, Mary really aged from DVD show to MTM show. She was still very pretty (with a nice figure) but she aged a lot. If you would show me a clip of a mid MTM show not knowing her age, I would guess that MTM was 42, when she was 36. I am 45 now and cannot believe that MTM was younger than me. In defense, Gavin McLeod looked older.

I think that MTM was a Hollywood TV starlet who lived the early to mid 60's partying and drinking and then got the brains in her 30's to get sober because of diabetes and/or her husband Grant Tinker did not like it. I don't know.

I think MTM went through a transformation in the late 1960's. She saved her life so we can still see her alive now. Probably did not hurt that she married a doctor!

I have said this on the board, but I think Ellie Kemper from The Office would be a perfect MTM for a biopic.

What happened to Richard Meeker. MTM's first husband who married MTM at 18. Could you imagine MTM at 18 years old? What happened to him? Did he become successful? Were the two frineds or had contact with each other? That would be fascinating. I also salute Mr. Meeker for having sex with an 18 year old MTM. if I were the President of the United States, I would award him the Medal of Freedom.

Gee the way you put it, it sounds like he discovered the cure for Cancer.

I believe Mary Tyler Moore got diabetes in her early 30s. I think when she was diagnosed her blood glucose (BG) was over 700 and she was hospitalized. A BG this high can be life-threatening and has to IMMEDIATELY be brought down. Most glucometers won't read over 600 and just report HIGH which means get help right away. She didn't looked like she aged a lot to me but T1 can do that as it is destroying the small blood vessels and thus affecting many key organs.

T1 can only be cured with a pancreas transplant. Otherwise T1's have to take insulin bec. their pancreas can't manufacture any (or at best a trace amount.)

ReT2 it is not curable but if caught early, and well controlled, someone can have their BG's in the normal range or near it. You can arrest it and keep it in remission or keep the disease process glacier like. But the minute you start eating like your non-diabetic friends just watch your BGs skyrocket.

I've seen this with myself (I'm a mild T2). Even with diet and exercise I can only keep my A1C in the low "pre-diabetic" range (very high 5's) the minute I eat too many processed carbs(which is rare) my BG goes between 150-175, which are not horrid readings for a T2 but non-diabetics would never get a reading like this. And I usually stay under 135 when I don't eat more than 35-40 g of carbs at a meal.

On another note, I have TREMENDOUS respect for T1's bec. everything MTM said is true. Bec. T1s can't make insulin their BG can fluctuate wildly if they don't carefully watch what the eat and program the insulin amt correctly. Fortunately there seem to be, and have been, great technological improvements like the pumps and that new device that can give you readings every 5-10 minutes.
