Nelson Could Have Been 'Jay Pritchett' Stars Who Turned Down TV Roles 7/16/12 *Craig T. Nelson as Jay Pritchett on "Modern Family"* Before Ed O'Neill became the patriarch of the Pritchett/Dunphy clan on "Modern Family", the role was offered to Craig T. Nelson (who is now playing a grandpa on "Parenthood").
