Norma Monty Rumson Born March 13, 1926 in North Bergen, NJ. The daughter of Tina and Joseph Montemurro, a well-known contractor in northern New Jersey, sister of Gloria Monty-O'Byrne, renowned TV director/producer who brought General Hospital to prominence. Miss Monty died on July 3 in Reno, Nevada. Norma Monty received a BA degree from the College of St. Elizabeth and an MA degree from Columbia University with honors. She also received 75 doctoral units in communications with an emphasis on drama and TV at the Film Institute of New York University. Ms. Monty began her career as an English teacher in Matawan, New Jersey, followed later on as the chairman of the English department in Middletown Township, NJ. She served in that capacity for 19 years, during which the English department was voted the best in the state on the secondary school level. Norma Monty then served as the supervisor of English for Edison Township school district in which she supervised the instruction of 150 teachers in six secondary schools. She then left the teaching profession and moved to California to become the associate producer of the television soap opera General Hospital. She advanced to the position of head writer of General Hospital. While serving as head writer of General Hospital, Norma received three Emmy nominations for best written soap opera. Upon her retirement, Norma split her time between her homes in Rumson, NJ and Rancho Mirage, Calif. In New Jersey, she was an active member of Deal Country Club and the Monmouth Beach Club. In California, she was a member of the Thunderbird Country Club. Norma Monty received numerous honors during her lifetime. In particular, Monmouth University honored her for the design and structure of their television film studio. She received honors for the children's cultural center in Monmouth County, NJ. She received the humanities achievement award from the College of St. Elizabeth. Norma was also active in numerous charities, including the children's cultural center of Monmouth County, New Jersey, the Monmouth County Visiting Nurse Association, The Rancho Mirage Public Library and the Eisenhower Medical Center of Rancho Mirage, California. She is survived by her aunt, Dorothy DePietro of Montville; and her cousin, Joseph DePietro MD of Lincroft. The wake will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, July 17, 2012 at John E. Day Funeral Home, 85 Riverside Ave., Red Bank. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 18, 2012 at Holy Cross Church, Rumson, with interment to follow at St. Catharine's Cemetery, Sea Girt.
