Default Brenda was able to live in Manhattan making $650 a month in 1977

She was excited about her raise and was saying..."I AM NOW MAKING $650 a month"

Wow, $650 a month in 2012 will have you in the MIDDLE of the Ghetto

BTW: Brenda was not supposed to mention her much she was making, that's confidential information.

Well that $650 was in 1977. I did a quick and dirty Consumer Price Index (CPI) check and May 1977 was 60.3 while May 2012 was 229.8 so her current monthly salary would be about $2,500 or $30K a year. That sounds about what a Teller with good experience would make. That means her current rent s/b $750 a month. The ONLY way I could see her having that kind of rent would be if she were in a rent-stabilized apartment for a long time &/or had a roommate -both are possible. Also rents were more reasonable back in 1977 in NYC. The price of housing in NYC rises faster than the overall rate of inflation.

I figured that, just the times and how things have changed. Just like how 2 years before that George Jefferson was wondering why his son turned down a $20,000 a year job in 1975. $20,000 in 2012 is not something I could live on
