Thumbs down No Offense, But What The Heck Did Daphne Ever See In Donny on 'Frasier?!?'

Daphne Moon was a siren, a beauty, what did she ever see in Donny??? (Saul Rubinek) He was gross in every sense of the word. I thought Daphne was better than that? Saul Rubinek is a good actor, but I was finding it real hard to believe that Daphne would ever fall for him.

I dunno. I know Donny was supposed to be a spoiler in the N/D love story, but he really wasn't charismatic or that great a character. YMMV

I didn't mind the character per se, but a better looking actor might have made it more believable.

Well, I think the idea was that Daphne, like a lot of women, was looking for certain qualities in a man, as well as someone who loved her. Donny loved her, and treated her well, and had a lot of those qualities she was looking for in a life partner. Even Roz liked and dated Donny, so he must have had something that women found attractive. So the package could have been prettier, but often that's the case, and the fact that the person is everything else you're looking for trumps outward appearance. The only problem is, Daphne wasn't in love with him. That was made clear by Daphne herself when she said to Roz a few episodes after she got together with Niles that this is the happiest time of her life because she's "in love with a man who loves her." To me, that says that that was the first time love has ever been mutual for her. So I think the way that Donny looks and the way he treats her was meant to be a precursor for Daphne falling for Niles. I think that's the only reason that Donny storyline even existed at all, is because they were working toward getting her together with Niles. Not only did that relationship with Donny create a whole season of gut-wrenching episodes, but we were also supposed to understand exactly what she was looking for in a man and that the package the person came in was less important to Daphne. And we already knew (from the very beginning) that Niles was all those things she was looking for. So it was a subtle segue to her realizing Niles was the one, as well as a way for us (the audience) to be able to buy that that realization happened so fast for her. Just my opinion though.

Yup, that was established in the episode "Decoys", which is in the top three of my all-time favorite Frasier episodes (the others being "Ham Radio" and "The Botched Language of Cranes"):

"Decoys"

Frasier, Season 6

Devastated by Daphne's blossoming relationship with Donny, Niles plans for a Crane Boys vacation to his newly acquired (from Maris in the divorce settlement) cabin. Upon learning Roz is still pining for Donny, Niles invites both Roz and Donny to the cabin, hoping to split up Daphne and Donny. When Frasier and Martin arrive earlier than expected, Niles and Roz are forced to pretend to be lovebirds to protect their scheme.

You're welcome! Roz and Donny had briefly dated, and I believe she was the one who introduced him to Daphne. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, you diehard Frasier fans out there - and you know who you are!!

In Decoys, she says they dated six months. She didn't introduce him to Daphne but she did recommend him to Niles as a lawyer who might be able to help in his divorce case. Donny spent some time at Frasier's apartment helping the gang prepare for the depositions and that's where he first met Daphne. In an ironic twist, the episode "Moondance" came up as a time that Maris's lawyers believed was proof that Niles was in love with Daphne during his marriage to Maris, and that caused Daphne to have to go with Donny back to his office for more preparation, allowing them to spend time together and develop a relationship. I just saw that episode a few hours ago in the Frasier marathon today on Hallmark... but it wouldn't have mattered.

That is hilarious that you brought up this topic, Monika because when I was wtaching "To Tell The Truth" Which is Donny's first appearance, I saw that scene where Niles and Frasier first meet Donny in his office and I'm thinking "How could she have fallen in love with him?" In fact, when I was watching that episode I even Tweeted about how I couldn't understand how Daphne could have fallen in love with Donny like that.

I do like Donny for the most part and thank God he was nothing like Mel. But I do agree with Brian Damage that a better looking actor would have made their relationship more believable.

My guess is that Donny was the first man to really pay attention to Daphne and show genuine interest in her. Well besides Niles of course but that's my point exactly. She'd had so much bad luck with dates and so forth that she probably just fell head over heels when the relationship started getting serious.

Exactly!

As for Mel, she was similar to Maris, so I could see how Niles would fall for that type of girl.

*shudders*. I hated her even more than Maris, if you can believe that! She was beyond awful! But yes, she was very similar to Maris in so many ways.

Ironically, I loved the actress (Jane Adams) as a doctor in Father of the Bride, Part II.
