*This includes spoilers for 'Something Borrowed Someone Blue" so don't read this if you haven't seen it and don't want it ruined.... It's worth being surprised, believe me!
I've seen Something Borrowed Someone Blue more times than I can count and every time I melt at Niles' confession to Daphne. I mean, who doesn't? But I have always wondered in that scene where he says..."Not a day has gone by when I haven't thought about you. Your smile, your beautiful eyes... what it woudl be like to hold your hands and ask you the question I never dared ask!" Of course this is when Donny comes in and asks "What's the difference between a blister and a boil?" But I've always wondered what question Niles was referring to. I like to think that he was going to propose or ask her if she loved him in return. Definitely a good topic to do a fan fiction about, but I was wondering what you all thought? Now that I think about it, he does ask her a few minutes later how she feels about him and that leads to the balcony scene and the infamous kiss. But still it's fun to imagine what he was wanting to ask her so badly. |

Yeah, my guess is that Niles wanted to ask the question, "will you go out with me?" |

Or maybe he was going to ask if Daphne loved him, the way that Niles loved her. Gee, now I'm melting just thinking about that scene.

I have wondered that exact thing too! And I have even thought about starting a topic about it, too. I'm glad you did.
I've come to the conclusion that it was really more of a convenient line for Donny to enter, but they were able to patch it together by having him ask moments later "how do you feel about me?" There's another thing that happens shortly after that scene when Donny enters that I can't help but think might have encouraged Niles along, and that's when Daphne locks the adjoining door to her suite. She is, in effect, locking her fiance out, and that's a pretty significant sign that she at least wants to have this discussion with Niles, if not a sign of more than that. I can't help but think that Niles had to feel overjoyed and encouraged by that. It encouraged me, anyway.

Thanks for the replies. I think we're all thinking the same thing! I for one, think I seriously need to do a story about that episode-another one that is! I've had something in mind for a while, so I really should write it as soon as I can!

Another thing I've wondered about this episode-- do you think that the whole thing with Simon asking if Daphne was "knocked up or something" was the writers' and producers' way of letting us in on the fact that Jane Leeves was pregnant? It came up five times in that episode, first with Simon, then again with Martin overhearing, then again in the elevator, then again when Simon asked if Niles was the "chap whose baby you're having" and one last time when Daphne's mother said it just before she went out onto the balcony to meet Niles. It doesn't seem like there's any logical reason for that storyline to be there, so I wondered if that was the reason. I would have thought that that was for sure the reason except that the timing seems so tight. Jane had her first child on January 9, 2001 and that episode aired May 18, 2000, so it would have been filmed in maybe mid to late April or early May 2000, so while it's possible that it was very, very early in her pregnancy when they filmed that episode, it's also just as possible that she wasn't yet (but was about to be). They also had her eating all those cookies in that episode, which we know was the beginning of her "weight problem" that they used to explain the weight gain from her pregnancy. The only thing is, I'm not sure they would have risked that scene where she ran toward Simon and Kelsey grabbed her up and tossed her over his shoulder and carried her out to the elevator if she was already pregnant, so maybe she wasn't yet but they were anticipating the pregnancy she was hoping for? But then again, it doesn't seem like they would put that storyline there and have her eating all those cookies if she wasn't yet. If she was pregnant at all yet, the very most she could have possibly been at the time of this episode was maybe 4 weeks along unless her first child was a couple of weeks late or something, then she may have been around six weeks along... still very early. Any thoughts? Anybody know for sure?

I don't know the details of her pregnancies though. But those are just my observations. |

That's funny that you mention "Taking Liberties" and "The Bad Son" though, because according to the production codes, they were filmed before "Dish," making her a little further along in "Dish" than she was in those other two episodes. I'm starting to think maybe she wasn't pregnant yet in SBSB though, but the writers and producers knew that she and her husband were trying, and since it was the season finale and no filming would take place over the summer, they assumed she would likely be pregnant by the time they returned to production so they planned ahead a bit. Because if you think about it, if for some reason she did not get pregnant, that whole bit with the cookies and the joking about Daphne having a baby could have just fit right into the context of the SBSB episode by itself and it would have been just fine. But if she did return from the hiatus pregnant, then they would already have paved the way a bit for the storylines they put in to cover the pregnancy and maternity leave. It's actually rather brilliant, if you think about it, because they have themselves covered either way, and would have had a seamless transition into season 8 either way, and they look really smart either way too. Those clever writers.
