Default Was a white man being married to a black woman really a big thing back in the 70's

We found out that george was jealous of interracial couples for whatever reason that was going threw his mind but since it was the 70's and interracial people getting married was new he should not have had a problem with it since he new that people cant help who they fall in love with, Was interracial marriage a big deal in the 70's and 80's.

In the 70's a black person being married to a white person was a big thing. (thats a no brainer). This was just after the civil rights movement, and the country was just beginning to intergrate. Prior to 1967 it was illegal for a black person to marry a white person (and the other way around too).

Norman Lear was ahead of the curve. You have to remember too that when the Jeffersons premiered it was only 7 years after Diahann Carroll and Bill Cosby became the first black series leads since the early 50's.

It most certainly WAS a big deal back then. Now it's very common to see interracial couples, but back then it was quite rare and when they were encountered, they were (unfortunately) often remarked upon. And those that commented weren't necessarily racist, nor were their comments. Sometimes it wasn't "how horrible!", but more "Wow! I haven't seen that before!"

Because they hadn't.

I grew up in NC in the 70's and I never saw any interracial couples during that time.

Grew up here in IL during that same time. We would VERY occasionally see an interracial couple when shopping out of town, usually in a somewhat larger city. But I never personally knew any interracial couples.

Yeah i dont see any interracial couples here in florida which is very rare i might see some every now and then but i guess most people are afraid to date outside their race its to risky having people give you stares could be rude and awkward everyday, Was george a little harsh for always harassing tom and helen every chance he got for being a mixed couple he was out of line with some of the things he said to other people.

That's right! You are in Florida! Back in the 80's, I don't recall seeing too many interracial couples where we lived, dude. I'm from the Tampa area. I had ABC on channel 10 before it became 28 then ABC 7. In addition, I also had on the UHF station WWSB 40 ABC but it was snowy at times. LOL.

I am going to tampa for a family reunion this saturday its going to be boring but i have to pay my respect to my family people even if they are weird lol, I think george was angry about them being a mixed couple because he did not want to think about a white man having sexual relations with a black woman i guess his mind was playing tricks with him, insome ways george was lucky tom did not hit him for always talking trash lol

It was a very big deal. Tina Andrews who played Henrietta on Good Times and Fred Sanford's niece Elizabeth on Sanford and Son, was fired from Days Of Our Lives for her character being in a interracial relationship in 1977. The biggest reason she got fired was because she had a kissing scene with the white actor who played her boyfriend. In fact the kissing scene Tom and Helen had on the Jeffersons was cut from the series premiere and not seen until years later in syndication!

I posted a article on this board 2 weeks ago that mentioned the kiss was seen on the premiere of the Jeffersons. Are you saying that when you watched this episode live in 1975 your local CBS station didn't air the kiss between Tom and Helen?

He seems to have a hard time explaining what he is trying to say which is why it's hard to take what he post seriously.

Maybe he doesn't understand what the word jealous means. Then again, a lot of his posts make little sense. It might be that he is just learning how to speak English? Or perhaps he just needs to remember to take his medication.
