Movie Reviews: The Amazing Spider-Man
Since The Amazing Spider-Man opened to a handful of locations on Monday, some U.S. critics are getting a head start by releasing reviews of the movie a day earlier than the film’s national release. Most have been positive if not enthusiastic. Roger Ebert writes in the Chicago Sun-Times: “This is a more thoughtful film, and its action scenes are easier to follow in space and time. If we didn’t really need to be told Spidey’s origin story again, at least it’s done with more detail and provides better reasons for why Peter Parker throws himself into his superhero role.” Claudia Puig in USA Today explains that it’s not really a prequel to the first film. “This version adds illuminating plot points, improving on what has gone before. One of the major reasons it works so well is the gangly charm of Andrew Garfield in the lead role.” Kenneth Turan in the Los Angeles Times concludes that Sony has made “a shrewd wager that mostly — but not entirely — pays off.” At 2 hours 18 minutes, there’s too much going on that seems to be filler, he suggests. “This is a film that is memorable in pieces but not as a whole, doing enough right things in key areas to ensure box-office success but permitted to drift into earnest pokiness when the spotlight is not on,” he writes. -IMDB News |

Spiderman is Amazing!! Here's the one day total:
Spidey relaunches with Tuesday record of $35M LOS ANGELES (AP) — "The Amazing Spider-Man" has swung into action with $35 million domestically in its first day — a record for a film opening on Tuesday. The new launch for the Marvel Comics superhero outdid the previous best Tuesday debut of $27.9 million for "Transformers," which also opened the day before the Fourth of July in 2007. Box-office trackers had projected that "The Amazing Spider-Man" might earn around $120 million in its first six days, through the end of Fourth of July weekend. But its strong start indicates it could do considerably more. The original "Transformers" went on to do $155.4 million domestically through Fourth of July weekend, which included receipts from Monday night previews before its official Tuesday debut. "Transformers: Dark of the Moon" opened the week before the Fourth of July last year and pulled in $180.7 million in just over six days. The opening-day results show the resilience of the Spider-Man brand, which set box-office records from 2002 to 2007 with the three films directed by Sam Raimi and starring Tobey Maguire as the web-slinging superhero. After a falling out between Raimi and distributor Sony on a fourth film, the franchise started over, with Marc Webb directing and Andrew Garfield slipping into Spider-Man's red-and-blue suit. "The Amazing Spider-Man" retells the story of how a bite from a radioactive spider endows gangly teen Peter Parker with super strength, agility and senses. The film co-stars Emma Stone, Rhys Ifans, Martin Sheen and Sally Field. Some critics had argued that it was too soon to reboot the franchise, just five years after Raimi and Maguire's "Spider-Man 3." But good reviews for "The Amazing Spider-Man" and a solid box-office start should put the carping to rest on the film, which also had a strong head-start overseas last week with about $50 million in a handful of international markets. Debuting on a Tuesday, "The Amazing Spider-Man" is far down the list of best opening days, since most movies premiere on Friday as the weekend kicks off. Last summer's "Harry Potter" finale had the best single-day start ever with $91.1 million. It's followed by last May's "The Avengers" with $80.8 million on its way to a record $207.4 million opening weekend. "Spider-Man 3" opened on a Friday in May 2007, taking in $59.8 million on day one and $151.1 million for the weekend, which was a record at the time. "The Amazing Spider-Man" is the middle chapter in Hollywood's superhero summer, which opened with Disney and Marvel's "The Avengers," whose worldwide receipts have climbed to $1.45 billion. On July 20, DC Comics and Warner Bros. debut "The Dark Knight Rises," the third and final Batman movie from director Christopher Nolan, starring Christian Bale as the masked vigilante. |

Movie Reviews: The Amazing Spider-Man
The overwhelming concensus among film critics is that The Amazing Spider-Man is perfectly adequate summertime fare and a clear improvement over Spider-Man 3, while not measuring up to the first two Spider-Man movies. Several critics credit the performance of British actor Andrew Garfield in the title role for lifting it above the usual razzle-dazzle of mostly computer-generated superhero movies. Michael Phillips in the Chicago Tribune remarks that Garfield represents a significant change from predecessor Tobey Maguire. “He’s a rebel with a cause and ultralight ultra-thin metal cable shooting out of his wrists. And he’s very good.” Peter Howell in the Toronto Star is one of a number of critics who praise the film but maintain that it is a far cry from the original two. Nevertheless, he writes, “Andrew Garfield makes a dandy Peter and an even better Spidey, being far closer to the smartass Marvel Comics original than Tobey Maguire’s rather wan depiction.” In the San Francisco Chronicle, Mick LaSalle comments: “Garfield is not nearly as charming or as idiosyncratic as Tobey Maguire. But Maguire’s reflective quality often rendered him passive. Garfield, a good actor, has a prickly, ruffled undertone that makes him, by nature, more active, more angry and more suited to prowling the streets at night. It’s easier to believe in his anger.” And Ann Hornaday in the Washington Post also finds Garfield’s portray impressive. “With his soulful brown eyes and mop of untamed hair, Garfield is winningly believable as a shy, nerdy outcast — and just as credible as the scrambling, preternaturally limber superhero who saves the day,” she writes. But a handful of critics refuse to go along. Lou Lumenick of the New York Post is one of them, remarking that Garfield could have made a fine Spidey: “if he had been given a better script with something like the wit, charm and energy of the first two Spider-Man films. Instead, he’s saddled with a slightly darker version of the original film from 10 years ago — filled with unmotivated actions and wholly arbitrary plot twists. Add a slow-as-molasses first half, choppy editing, so-so effects and a chemistry-free love story, and you’ve hardly got a recipe for fun.” And Rafer Guzmán in Long Island’s Newsday calls the movie a “disappointment” and dismisses it as “a much-hyped, expensive-looking and ultimately soulless reboot.” As for Garfield, Guzmán writes, he “makes for a sullen, sour Peter.” -IMDB News |

This was the best Spiderman movie ever! Seen it twice the acting was great so were the actions scenes when he discovers he can move like a Ninja and has to learn to control his strength. Can't wait for the sequel.

Saw this on July 7, and thought it was absolutely incredible. It blew the Sam Raimi trilogy out of the water with how in depth they got with going into greater detail with Peter Parker and his history, I am glad that they spent their time on Gwen Stacy allowing people who didn't know that much about her to get to know her and her personality. Also I loved Sally Field and Martin Sheen in this thought that they had terrific chemistry together.
