Cool Joss Whedon's "Firefly" To Celebrate 10 Years at Comic-Con 2012

Comic-Con 2012: Joss Whedon, Nathan Fillion Set for "Firefly" Anniversary Panel (Exclusive)
6/27/2012
by Lesley Goldberg

It's official: "Firefly" is heading to Comic-Con.

The short-lived cult hit from "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" creator Joss Whedon will make its debut at the San Diego convention with a special 10-year anniversary panel, The Hollywood Reporter has learned exclusively.

Whedon and writer Tim Minear will join stars Nathan Fillion, Alan Tudyk, Adam Baldwin, Sean Maher, Michael Fairman and the rest of the crew of the Serenity for a panel on Friday, July 13 at 12:30 p.m. in Ballroom 20.

The series is part of the Comic-Con slate from first-time attendee Science Channel, which began airing repeats of the Fox space Western last year, where it has continued to draw an audience of loyal Browncoats and attract new fans during its run.

Science will also make available special collectible bags featuring "Firefly" and the rest of its Comic-Con lineup.

In addition to the panel discussion, the hourlong session will also feature never-before-seen footage along with what Science is billing as "numerous buzz-worthy surprises."

This is one show that definitely deserved to last a lot longer than just one season. It's great that the cast and crew have stayed loyal to the show and its fans.

"Firefly" Reunion TV Special Filming at Comic-Con -- EXCLUSIVE
by James Hibberd
July 11 2012

"Firefly" is getting a shiny new TV special.

To celebrate the cult-favorite sci-fi drama’s 10th anniversary, Science Channel is shooting a new one-hour special chronicling the "Firefly" cast reunion at Comic-Con this week.

The special — titled "Browncoats Unite" — will include footage from Friday’s reunion panel, featuring several members of the original team including star Nathan Fillion and creator Joss Whedon.

Plus, the cast is shooting an in-depth behind-the-scenes roundtable interview that will dive deeper into burning fan questions about the beloved series. Both the panel and the roundtable will be moderated by Entertainment Weekly‘s own Jeff Jensen.

'Firefly' is a landmark work of science fiction and a favorite with our viewers,” said Debbie Myers, general manager and executive vp of Science.

Ever since it premiered on Science, fans have asked us to do something special to mark its 10-year anniversary. With this signature celebration, punctuated by Browncoats Unite, we will connect the minds behind this classic franchise with its legions of passionate fans.

In addition to Whedon and Fillion, Friday’s 12:30 p.m. Comic-Con panel will feature Alan Tudyk, Summer Glau, Adam Baldwin, Sean Maher, showrunner Tim Minear, and writer Jose Molina. The special, produced by Pangolin Pictures, promises to unearth defining memories and first-person accounts of making the show from both sides of the camera.

"Browncoats Unite" will air on Science, along with an all-day marathon of "Firefly" episodes, on Sunday, Nov. 11.

Comic-Con 2012: "Firefly" Reunion 'Beyond Vindication' for Joss Whedon
7/13/2012
by Michael O'Connell

Nothing makes 2002 seem farther in the rearview mirror like clips of Joss Whedon's short-lived "Firefly" set to LMFAO's 'Sexy and I Know It'.

But that's how the reunion of the one-season Fox series kicked off -- with 4,000-odd fans in Comic-Con's Ballroom 20 convulsing out of glee to a montage of raised eyebrows and one-liners in a new promo for its upcoming Science Channel run.

The reception grew to a standing ovation when Whedon, writer Tim Minear and stars Nathan Fillion, Alan Tudyk, Adam Baldwin, Sean Maher and Summer Glau took the stage to rehash favorite scenes and talk about the show's brief production.

Whedon, who's been vocal over the years about his frustration with "Firefly's" cancellation, was quick to note that the time for hard feelings had long passed.

"It goes beyond vindication," he said of the anniversary celebrations. "Vindication came a long time ago. It goes to a place of transcendence."

There was no real news to deliver. "Firefly" has been off the air since almost immediately after its premiere, and the subsequent theatrical labor of love, Serenity, did not make nearly enough money for a follow-up to be feasible.

Comics remain an option for future stories, though -- as Whedon was quick to note that 2007's Serenity: The Shepherd's Tale is the best-selling graphic novel in Dark Horse history.

"It was one of the finest nervous breakdowns a man could have," Whedon said of his one-off effort to reassemble what he affectionately refers to the best cast he'll ever work with. "We always knew from the very beginning that everything we were doing, we were doing for the right reasons with the right people."

The rest of the panel lingered on inside jokes, fan praise and a brief improv radio play of a "Firefly" episode, but there was one particularly tender moment. Whedon, praising Fillion's work as an actor, segued into a story about his moral fiber.

Fillion, who joked about crying the entire time, finally started to choke up. And by the end of the hourlong Q&A, so did everybody else.
