I-TEAM: Bizarre Plan May Allow Accused Chardon Shooter to Make Bond

Posted on: 5:34 pm, June 25, 2012, by Bill Sheil, updated on: 05:52pm, June 25, 2012

CLEVELAND – The FOX 8 I-Team has learned that a plan appears to be in the works that would have the accused Chardon school shooter, T.J. Lane, make bond–but not be allowed to go free.

Lane remains in a juvenile detention facility, accused of killing three fellow Chardon High School students in February and wounding three more.

His bond has been set at $1 million. That bond can be secured in two ways: someone could put up the full $1 million in cash, or they could pay a bondsman a non-refundable $100,000 fee.

The I-Team has obtained an official email sent to the families of the victims. In it, officials tell the families “there is nothing to be concerned about” regarding the possibility of Lane getting out of a restricted environment and quotes defense counsel as saying someone is willing to put up the bond. The email says prosecutors asked for, and the judge granted, restrictions that would be placed on Lane if his bond is posted. Those restrictions would mean that, if the bond is posted, Lane would be transferred from a juvenile detention facility to a “lock down (jail like) mental hospital for treatment at his own expense.”

Lane is in a juvenile facility right now, instead of jail, because someone is anonymously paying the $120 fee it costs to keep him there. The email to the families says that “a law firm in Los Angeles on behalf of an anonymous client” may put up the bond money.

There is no indication at this time as to why that “client” would front the money–whether to secure some type of rights to Lane’s story or for some other reason.

The email says the families will be the first to know if bond is posted for Lane, and that authorities continue to seek justice and hope to “keep the defendant where he belongs…in prison.”

I know, but to me it still smacks of special treatment. He's already allowed to stay in a juvie facility rather than be moved into the adult prison even though he will be tried as an adult when the trial starts in August. The only good thing about that is at least the taxpayers of Geauga County (where Chardon is) don't have to foot the bill for that. Someone is anonymously paying $120 a day for him to stay in juvie hall. I still don't think that's exactly fair, but I digress.

Anyway, it will be really interesting to see what happens come August. The uncle of one of the students killed is an area police officer, which one would think would carry some weight. However, he is an officer in Lake County, not Geauga County (which are right next to each other).
