It's Official: Arsenio Hall to Return to Late-Night TV
Warm up your shoulder and throw your fist in the air: Arsenio Hall is back with a new talk show. Woof! Woof! Woof!
The former host of The Arsenio Hall Show will partner with CBS Television Distribution to preside over a syndicated, late-night talk show that will debut in fall 2013 and will run Monday–Friday. The news follows Hall’s recent win on The Celebrity Apprentice, a move that pushed him back into the spotlight after years of relative inactivity. The comedian made a name for himself as host of his eponymous chatfest, which ran from 1989–1994 and featured notable moments like a campaigning Bill Clinton’s sax solo and an hour-long interview with Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan. His 1997 sitcom, Arsenio, lasted only a few episodes. The Hollywood Reporter reports that Hall’s new venture has already been sold in markets covering more than half of the country. http://tvline.com/2012/06/18/arsenio...v/#more-338179 |

I'm rooting for him to succeed, but I really don't see this lasting. I know he's cleared a lot of Tribune stations, but the majority of Fox stations won't want to give up their lucrative sitcom reruns to air Arsenio in a reasonable timeslot (if they wouldn't for a network Conan O'Brien show, they definitely won't for a syndicated Arsenio Hall show). And even if they do, will Arsenio be able to compete with Letterman, Leno or Kimmel? Or even Ferguson and Fallon? No.
I think he should have gone for the post-Conan slot on TBS instead, or maybe a syndicated prime access show. |
