NEW YORK (June 17, 2012)--Former television screenwriter Ted Shuttleworth, 51, has been arrested after punching his poodle in the face so hard that it died of a brain injury, police said.

Shuttleworth was arrested Saturday at his home in Queens after punching his dog on May 29 because he was angry at the animal.

The dog weighed about four pounds.

A spokesman for the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals said the dog sustained a traumatic brain injury.

Shuttleworth. a former TV writer who once worked for "NYPD Blue," could face as much as a year in prison.

His wife told the newspaper that the dog's death was a "horrible accident."

I was unaware you could go to jail for killing a dog. Don't get me wrong I loathe people who abuse animals, and think he deserves jail time, I just didn't know that was against the law.

Poor doggy.

You can go to jail just as fast for abusing an animal as you can for abusing a child.

Poor doggy.
Animal abuse is against the law, just about everywhere as far as I know. As it should be.

This certainly qualifies.

Yes, I agree it should be. I just didn't know.

I'm a dog lover and some horror stories I've heard - about how people treat them - just makes me sick.

Totally agree, Adam. Animals are in our charge and it's our responsibility to treat them with kindness and dignity wherever possible. As a pet owner I actually try to avoid these types of stories when I can because they tend to make me absolutely furious.

It is not an accident when you hit a dog so hard that you kill it.

Madderest

This is sick, cruel and beyond heartbreaking. I'm usually not a fan of PETA but I hope they jump all over him like flies on you know what - in addition to the criminal justice system throwing the book at him. That poor dog.
