Doesn't anyone know why they split up the seasons into the volumes on DVD?
I would rather buy the FULL season on DVD instead. Dynasty comes to mind! Even The Addams Family seasons are in volumes! |

Greed would be the most logical answer, they figured that if someone were willing to pay the price for a full season then they'd probably do the same if they were split into volumes.

I won't buy any volumes at all. (except the prime time and daytime cartoons - Family Guy, American Dad, Pinky & The Brain to name a few) it is NOT worth to spend that kind of money. |

I hate volume sets also, I was at Big Lots and saw Dynasty (S2) which was the entire season with all 22 episodes and season 4, volume 2 which contained half of the 27 episodes yet both were priced at $10.

It was very camp back in the day. Those catfights was so much fun too. Oh well! I may never see Dynasty ever again. I already have Dallas in my DVD collection, but I don't think I will get all of them. The last few seasons sucked! I hoped the NEW Dallas will be big on TNT! Maybe, it could lead to a new Dynasty and Knots Landing. LOL |

to me it seems like they are just asking for lower sales - who in their right mind would buy a volume 1 if there is no guarantee of a volume 2 ever coming out?
I would have bought the Love Boat sets, but the volume releases were so discouraging that I'm just going to wait until they've all been released. |

The worst example of this is 'My Three Sons'.

Volume sets work well for cartoons which often only have 1 or 2 "seasons" but sometimes like 65 episodes in that short time frame. When you are dealing with such a large number of episodes (hence large number of discs) per season then it's an easier sell when split into 2 volumes of 3 or 4 discs.
But yeah I agree it's silly to split up a sitcom or drama that is well under 40 eps a season. Once a show's DVD releases have started, consistently keeping it one way or another would be preferable from a collector's standpoint. I think the powers that be have figured it out that volumes with fewer discs have a lower price point and therefore an easier sell. Plus it means double the amount of releases that can be spread out over a longer time and probably more money made in the end if done right. As usual, it's good for big business and bad for the consumer. |

Dynasty is possibly the worst example of how the studios neglect fans. Season one came out in 2005 from Fox. This was a 13-episode set which did not include Joan Collins, who, for many, was the reason for revisiting the show. The sales tanked and Fox would not commit to future releases. A little over 2 years later, CBS/Paramount picked up the ball and released season 2 complete in a 22-episode set. Fine. But subsequent sets were broken up into the dreaded split-season half-sets. Ostensibly because there were more episodes in subsequent seasons. Highly-priced, these half-season sets have failed to set the world on fire sales-wise and the releases have trickled down to once a year. To make matters more maddening, overseas, Dynasty is released in full-season sets and they have already announced season eight. Season six will be released here in July, once again in half-season sets. BUT! you can buy the two half-seasons bundled together for about four dollars MORE than buying the two sets individually. I've managed to collect the five seasons released by primarily buying used. The show was going down hill by season six, and I'll just keep the 5 seasons I have and give up. (spoiler alert) Yeah. Let's end the show by having all the principal players shot by terrorists. (The ending of Dynasty has never really been properly resolved, even in the reunion show). I've also heard that CBS/Paramount is going to shift from the good film transfers used up until now to tape transfers of lesser quality for new releases of this show. The folks in the UK have already registered complaints regarding the quality of season six. If DVD sales have been down lately, it comes as no surprise when I learn of corporate greed like this. Why should we in the US pay more than those in the UK for this show? A big thumbs down to Paramount for causing Dynasty fans these headaches.

They released Cannon like this and it effectively doubled the cost vs. other series that had complete seasons. Plus I have read they are not remastered and look poor also. Now they are not releasing any more due to low sales. That show may not have sold gangbusters but releasing it in half seasons un-remastered did not help any. I may pick them up used off Amazon one day if I find it at the right price.

I hate when they do that - so annoying.
