Default Why was Caroline McWilliams (Marcy) written out of the show?

She was a lovely woman and the character of Marcy was quite likeable.

According to her bio on IMDB, it doesn't appear that she moved on to anything significant immediatley after Benson, at least in television.

Characters are written out of sitcoms for a variety of reasons; I'd love to know what happened in this case.

I believe it was her choice to leave - she wanted to take a break from acting and marry Michael Keaton.

I believe this is basically true, and I think the union with Keaton also meant she would be moving (I think to New York?) and would not be in CA. any longer to film Benson.

I preferred Caroline McWilliams to Didi Conn. Too bad she didn't stay for the rest of the series.

Thanks for the response.

When you look at the timeline of her marriage and departure from the show, the family decision makes sense.

Interestingly, her character left the governor's staff to go with her new husband who was starting a business in another state.

Just a coincidence?!

Yes, to a pre-Cheers Ted Danson!! It seems like they were indeed blurring the lines between reel and real life writing Caroline/Marcy out of the show. Plus, Michael and Caroline were married in 1982 and their son, Sean, came along in 1983. Michael was making movies like Mr. Mom at the time, and it seemed that Caroline was satisfied taking a break from the biz then.

My favorite seasons were the Marcy Years. Glad Susan Harris cast her on the show after her work on Soap.

I liked her a lot, too. I can relate a lot to Marcy - a 30-something tall, skinny single brunette with a first name that starts with "M".
