Default What does your childhood home look like today?

I still live in my hometown and the other day, my mom and I drove by the house we lived in until I was 12. It's been about 13 years since my parents and I moved out of the house and sadly, it's practically unrecognizable. Literally every tree and shrub is gone and the yard has given way to weeds. Trees limbs are falling down, and junk is piled in what used to be a basketball court. Honestly, the entire neighborhood has gone downhill unusually fast. It's really sad to see your childhood home in that kind of a state, especially when you remember how it used to look.

So, my question is, how many of you have been by your childhood homes lately? If so, was it a fun visit, or a depressing one?

My mom still lives in our original home. But when I was little the house had only 4 rooms. A Kitchen, Living Room and 2 bedrooms. No bathroom until I turned 5 years old. We had an outhouse until one day when my dad went in there and there was a snake! That's when he knew it was time to build in a bathroom. Also that same year a third bedroom was added on. By this time there were 4 kids. As our family grew(7 Children) my dad kept adding on room by room. Today it is a much larger home and has been completely remodeled and enlarged. I don't have a recent picture of our house but here's what it looked like until I was about 5 years old.My brother and I shared a bedroom with bunk beds. The window on the right was our room. On the left the living room which is now a bedroom. A new wing was added on the right side which included a larger living room, a bedroom and a half bathroom. The bathroom and third bedroom was added to the back of the house. This picture was taken around 1952.

A side note here; There is a woods in back with a forgotten cemetery. We used to go back there on picnics. Now days all of the headstones have fallen down and are sunken into the ground. I was back there about 10 years ago and we only found 4 headstones. It's kind of sad.
Also (now I'm going to really show my age here) a railroad track runs through those woods and I remember watching the steam engines and their puffs of smoke traveling through. I loved listening to the train go through at night and listening to that far off lonely whistle. By the way, our house was on a dirt road about 1 mile out of our small town. It sure looks different today!

The house I was born in is now part of the huge ghetto my city is famous for,but the house I spent my early childhood years looks a little bit the way I remember. A good chunk of that neighborhood was demolished so they could extend the airport runway, trouble is, they didn't have to because nobody comes to St.Louis.

Be careful, you know what that stretch of highway is known for.

I haven't seen the home I grew up in for 18 years. I actually googled it a few months ago though and there was a picture of it on one of the retail sites. It looks about the same that I remember it.

We lived in several different houses when I was growing up, all but one is still standing. Two of them still look okay but the other one is pretty run down. I don't think anyone has lived in that one for several years.

In my childhood, we lived in a duplex. We lived on one side of a house and another family lived on the other side. It still looks the same as it did when we moved out of it 17 years ago.... minor things have changed to it.

I looked up the address of my childhood home and there was a picture of it. It still looks pretty good. I'm glad. I had a great childhood and I loved that house. A tree is missing and some things added, but it has been well taken care of.

I am still in my childhood home. Never moved out. Just two of living here now. Moneys a bit tight so not much remodeling has been done in 30 years. Need a new bathroom. House overlooks the ocean in a pretty area.
Sadly will probably stay here til I die.

My parents still live there...for now.

But I'm concerned that they may HAVE to move-out by foreclosure! (My mom got another notice from the bank or something and she says that she CAN'T do anything about it).

Duplex, that's a term I haven't heard in a while. I remember the show Life of Riley and Riley's friend lived in duplex. Didn't that name change to a Condo in the mid 1980's

One of them is now on the corner of a cul-de-sac, and the one next door is next to a much bigger two-story house. The street itself still needs some improvement though, i.e. it needs to be consistentley even and two lanes on both sides.

Yes, my family moved to the new house next door when I was a little kid.

We lived in housing projects up until I was 8 years old. My mother worked late night and was coming home one night and was nearly attacted by a thug in the parking lot of the complex, luckly my father was watching out the window and screamed at the thug and it scared him off. After that incedent, my parents bought a house in a nice neighborhood. The projects are still standing to this day, but theres like a murder there every two or three weeks. About 20 years ago, someone was murdered in the same apartmemt we lived in. Its kinda scary to think about it. Thank god my parents got us out of there when they did.
