He never thought so, because his role was smaller than everybody else's. What do you think? |

Really? I thought he just never won one. He wasn't even nominated for the Love Boat either? |

Well, it is sad because he was great in that role.
No, he wasn't a leading man type, but his understated role was still significant and added a lot to the show. Sometimes I think the fact that an acting job seems effortless makes it seem less worthy in some ways; i.e. 'what he was doing wasn't that hard so why nominate him?'. In reality, these types of roles are often harder to play because you have to do a lot more with much less in the script. A real pity, for sure. |

Excellent post, I think he shined most as Murray rather than the lead as Captain Stubing on the Love Boat. His little one liners especially towards Ted, got a lot of laughs from the audience. |

Gavin at least deserved to be nominated for MTM, but got overshadowed by Ed Asner and Ted Knight.

^ Yeah, while I liked him as Stubing he wasn't as memorable as Murray, even though he had the lead role in Love Boat. LB's comedy was much more corny than MTM's; not to say I didn't enjoy it because I did, but you really can't compare the two shows in terms of quality.
I always thought Murray had a great chemistry with Sue Ann, too...some of their jibes were just brutal!

Murray was on in every episode, unlike Phyllis (which won Cloris two (?) Emmys). Gavin definitely had a lot of screen time, at least when the action took place in the newsroom.

Interesting, do you guys think he was a victim of TMTMS overall success?

Personally, I think that McLeod ultimately benefited a lot from TMTMS. If not for that, he'd have likely never gotten the Love Boat gig...and that coupled with TMTMS probably ensured he'd never really have to work again. I mean, he really wasn't in much else besides those two shows. Never had another series, and his movie and TV career was relegated to guest starring roles.

^ Prior to TMTMS, Gavin had a recurring role on McHale's Navy, but he ended up having the biggest and longest-running show of all the TMTMS regulars when all was said and done. I can't even imagine anyone else as Captain Stubing.

OK, thanks...didn't realize that about McHale's Navy. (as an aside, I have never watched a single episode of that show...it was never syndicated in my area!) |

Same here...but I read about it in Gavin's book.
Ernest Borgnine was the star of that program.

![]() Also being a Clint Eastwood fan, he had a role in the 1970 film Kelly's Heroes as Donald Sutherland's sidekick. They were funny together.

In the article I linked up at the top, Gavin said he was miserable doing Mchale's Navy.
