Maybe there is a thread on this somewhere, but I don't feel like looking.
This movie was on TCM the other night. It was Tina's movie debut (1958). The movie didn't make much sense. What the movie was a who's who of future TV stars. Jack Lord, Michael Landon, Vic Morrow and of course Tina. Jack Lord played her husband, who she was cheating on. |

Actually, that was "God's Little Acre", a film version of a novel from 1933 written by Erskine Caldwell, who enjoyed a short period of time as one of the country's premier novellists in the 1930's. He also wrote Tobacco Road. His novels and short stories were usually set in rural Depression-era Georgia (his native state), and he was often rather vicious in his satire of southern rural people. The movie couldn't follow the book very closely, due to the movie censors at the time. Some day, a modern film version of it ought to be made.

I thought not long after I posted that I may have gotten the title wrong.
At least you know what I was talking about. I don't think hardly anyone on this thread heard of the movie. It was mentioned on TCM that the movie bombed and that it made money back by showing it on TV. It was R rated at the time, but by today's standards it doesn't seem that scandalous. |

The book was rather scandalous when it was published in 1933. In fact, if you have ever watched the movie "Mister Roberts", God's Little Acre was the supposedly "dirty" book that Ensign Pulver had been reading for months and underlining the sexy passages.
I've read it, and by today's standards it's pretty tame, but I can see how it was a shock in its day. |
