TV Meet The New Herman Munster: Jerry O'Connell

Jerry O'Connell to Play Herman Munster in NBC's "Munsters" Reboot
6/4/2012
by Lesley Goldberg

Jerry O'Connell has a new address: 1313 Mockingbird Lane.

The former "Defenders" star has been cast as Herman Munster in NBC's "Munsters" reboot, Mockingbird Lane, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.

The actor will play the patriarch of the family, who in the 1960s CBS comedy was played by Fred Gwynne.

In the reboot, Herman -- like in the original series -- has a permanent home under Grandpa Munster's thumb. O'Connell joins the previously cast Eddie Izzard, who will play the powerful and quick-witted vampire in a role that was originated by Al Lewis.

Mason Cook will play Herman and Lily's werewolf son, Eddie. Bryan Singer will executive produce and direct the pilot.

This has disaster written all over it. I've liked Jerry O'Connell in some of the shows he's done but he's no Herman Munster.

Back when I watched "Sliders" (which I got back into last month on DVD), I never pictured Jerry one day playing Herman Munster. Call me crazy.

I wonder if he does a (what I'm sure will be bad) impression of Fred Gwynne or just makes Herman Munster his own and plays him completely different. It'd be best for him if he plays him different, in my opinion.

He could probably do a bad imitation of John Schuck's Herman Munster then again nobody could do it worse than Schuck himself.

How bad was that show? I remember seeing it on my local channels in the late 80's but I never really watched it. It just looked so strange. lol

Who on Earth greenlit this abomination?

I've got an idea. Since Fuller wants to make a dramatic, serious Gothic series based on a 60's series, and Tim Burton wants to make a campy comedy, they should switch; Fuller should do the next Dark Shadows (not that there will ever be another one...ever...) and Burton should take over The Munsters.

Or, they could both just make something original. But I can't see that happening.

Who runs NBC? Really. Whoever runs NBC are either morons or on drugs or both. I say both.

This is a case in point. I am sure all the idea people come together in New York and L.A. hashing out ideas and all the ideas out there to get a green light is a 45 year old schlock program that was only on for two seasons and has at best a cult following.

The other idiotic show, The Farm with Rain Wilson. Fail. Fail. Fail. I knew a few years ago when they tried to put Leno in Prime Time it would fail. I honestly think Fred Muggs or his grandson runs the network.

I want a job with NBC, maybe a Vice President of programming. Experience? I watch TV. I know what people might like. Payment? A one bedroom apartment in Manhattan, food and beer allowance for a month and whatever drugs the rest of the programming department is doing.

NBC should just say "Screw it" and just show their 1980's shows and Parks and Recreation. It would do better than what is on there now.

I'm interested in this reboot. I like O'Connell and Izzard so I'll give a shot. I keep picturing this show being similar to Grimm since it's going to be a drama.
