Uncle Joe was too unlikeable sometimes to be funny..

I know it's only a TV show, and that his laziness was part of his 'character,' but it got to where I'd get annoyed in some episodes. I just watched "Uncle Joe Retires," and did NOT think it was funny. Everyone in the episode was 'going along with it,' and adoringly humored him. Retiring from what?
Anytime real work needed to be done, he'd pretend he had a slipped disc, or disappeared. He thought of himself as the lead partner of "Carson-Elliott" airlines, even though he knew nothing. He ate and napped the rest of the time.

Compare this with the Andy Griffith show, and "Barney." Barney WAS funny, when he overestimated his skills and achievements, but was truly worthy of respect because he tried so hard.

I never understood why Joe wasn't Kate's brother instead of HER uncle. Yea, I know it's possible for aunts/uncles to be close in age (or sometimes even younger) with nephews/nieces.

Yea, his sloth did get old--they should have had him at least make the effort every once in awhile to be really productive. One could only imagine what Kate's husband thought of him!!

Yes, Joe's character lacked charm, but I never "got" Edgar Buchanen, was he like that in real life, because he always played a lazy shiftless character?

I've seen the actor play many roles--he was not always the "Uncle Joe" persona.

I don't know, I don't seem him being that annoying despite being as lazy as he is. I think deep down he is trying to help the girls out as much as he can. I guess they have been living with him long enough that they don't care anymore.

Kate must have had the girls late in life. They are like 17,16 and 15? in the first season and Bea Benadaret was 57 and Edgar Buchanan was 60. My guess is that Kate's character was suppose to be younger maybe around 40. That wouldn't make the uncle/niece thing as bad. I thought they were brother/sister first time I saw the show.

I saw him once on an old episode of Leave it To Beaver and he played the kids uncle.

Did uncle Joe ever have a job in the past? I know Kate tried to get him to work a couple of times when the hotel needed money. But did Joe ever have a pention or savings or social security so he could help Kate out?

I thought the town was outside of Chicago or in MO. And how come it never snowed? I've seen some people wear a sweater and once in a while Sam had on a light coat that was un buttoned. A lot of sitcom charactors are "stupid" and wouldn't work in real life, but the show thinks if they made the charactor "normal" nobody would think they were funny or watch the show.

How come he always wore the same clothes everyday, or just about the same?
