Default Happy Birthday to the Dionne Quintuplets

The Dionne Quintuplets were big big news in their day (1934) I think that they were the first surviving quints. They were like rock stars! Sadly they were very exploited and could not lead a normal childhood. My grandma had a collection of newspaper clippings and other quint related paraphernalia. She was a huge quint fan! Happy 78th birthday to the three remaining quints, Emilie, Marie and Yvonne.

I was in high school in the 1970's when I first heard in some detail about this family. One of the assignments of a upper class was to write about a story of the 1930's and a classmate took the Dionne Quints. In those days, 5 babies born at once was big thing. The parents were poor and they probably felt , here's a way to get help. Never knowing how the children would suffer. Gee how is Nada Sudeman these days?

I believe there are 2 not 3 surviving quints.
The 3rd one died a few years back.

Here is a link about the quints and an interview with 3 of the girls commenting on the making of a film about their lives. So sad. So exploited! The Canadian government had taken them away from their parents and they were virtually raised behind glass.

I didn't know about that set of quints before. I do remember the septuplets McCoys, that were born in 1997. Since then there have been sextuplets and Octomom with 14 kids.

Those were some sick people who yanked these girls from their home and "raised" them in "Quintland". And the people who stormed the gates and ran to be the first ones to press their ugly mugs against the glass to watch these children are just as sick.

I suppose it could be said the Dionnes were the first "reality" stars. But the lives of children shouldn't be turned into freak shows. I feel exactly the same about "Jon and Kate's" 8 kids and about that other show 19 kids and counting. The outright exploitation of children disgusts me.

If the Dionne Quints births and lives happened today, Tv shows would be having them on their programs. All was had in the 30's was movie cameras, print ads, radio and newspaper articles. Television pulls in so much.
