Thought Jerry Seinfeld: 'There is no Seinfeld curse'

Jerry Seinfeld has denied the existence of the so-called 'Seinfeld curse'.

The 'Seinfeld curse' has become a popular phrase used to describe the perceived lack of success Seinfeld, Jason Alexander, Michael Richards and Julia Louis-Dreyfus have experienced since the series ended.

Jerry Seinfeld

During an interview on What What Happens Live, Seinfeld was asked by host Andy Cohen if there is any merit to talk of a 'curse'.

"Let me tell you this about the Seinfeld curse… I like anything named after me," the comedian joked.

Seinfeld went on to discuss the post-Seinfeld careers of his co-stars in a more serious vein.

"There never was a 'Seinfeld curse', because [co-creator] Larry David's done so well. I've done well... the New Adventures of Old Christine, Julia won an Emmy, so, curse fans, sorry, it's over."

Dreyfus is currently starring in political comedy Veep, which has been renewed for a second season by HBO.

Seinfeld's own panel show The Marriage Ref was recently canceled by NBC.

Thumbs up

Well, it took Julia a good long time to break the curse, too, until she hit big again with New Christine, and now Veep. Then you have the most frequent guest star, Wayne Knight, who has a steady gig on Hot in Cleveland.

I thought Jason Akexander got several roles after Seinfeld.

He did, but nothing that really jelled.

I don't believe there is a curse. The problems with Jason and Michael was someone decided to give them their own shows. They were great on Seinfeld, but they were supporting characters. So great that I think it's hard for anyone to see them as anything other than George and Kramer, sadly. Had either of them gone back to a supporting role after Seinfeld, they may have had success. Jerry was never an actor anyway and he's had success with his stand up comedy. There's no reason for him to even contemplate starring in another show again. Julia was arguably the most talented of the cast so it's no surprise that she had success with Old Christine although her first show after Seinfeld bombed, she kept trying. It also helped a lot that the character she played on Christine was the complete opposite of Elaine.

He's been pretty successful on Broadway and doing different stage productions. I'd love to see him and David Hyde Pierce in one. That would be amazing.

As for this so-called curse... Big deal if their shows were cancelled (speaking generally of course-this isn't directed to anyone's comments on this thread): I mean, IMO Seinfeld is a classic and to think that they are going to repeat that success (or even be expected to) is ridiculous! I think the only person who really hasn't had that much success is Michael Richards, but every one else seems to be doing well; Jerry has a successful stand up career and a family and he's made "Bee Movie" and so forth; and Julia has "Veep". I wish I could see it but I don't have HBO.

I had to at Jerry saying that he likes anything named after him. That was hilarious, but I expect nothing less from him!
