Texting While Walking Banned In NJ Town
Measure implemented after rise in pedestrian-related accidents
Posted: May 14 2012 6:29 AM CDT Updated: May 14 2012 12:14 PM CDT

One city in New Jersey is cracking down on texting while walking. Officials in Fort Lee have begun issuing tickets of up to $85 for each offense. The measure was implemented after a rise in pedestrian-related accidents. Fort Lee Police Chief Thomas Ripoli told ABC News, "It's a big distraction. Pedestrians aren't watching where they are going and they are not aware." More than 117 tickets have already been issued, the New Jersey Record reported.

I don't have a problem with this at all. Last time I tried texting while walking, I ran into a telephone poll, then fell off the curb twisting my ankle. I have seen people texting while crossing the street which can be very dangerous. It's not too hard to stop walking first, and then write your text. Hopefully all States will follow New Jersey's lead.

That's ridiculous. Why don't we just ban everything at this rate?

NOT paying attention to what is going on around you' because your eyes are riveted on a 3 .5 inch screen, or you're off in oblivion listening to a tune or talking on a cell, are all dangerous. And create wonderful breeding grounds for accidents. Don't like over-regulation either, but the law appears to be needed.

you would think the situation would lend itself to natural selection and thin out the herd of the worst offenders (of course those texting while driving are bound to have a much higher rate of collateral damage than someone walking and texting that steps in front of a bus.)

We have streets here in Oregon where the curbs where people walk are literally two feet from oncoming traffic. 82nd avenue is most notorious for this. Many have been hit and killed just walking too close to the curb. Texting while walking just adds to the statistic, so walking in front of a bus can be a very real possibility on such streets. As I previously stated, I don't see why a person can't just stop for thirty seconds and then write their text.

I agree! There's nothing that important that they can't stop texting long enough to get safely across the street or whatnot
