I've been watching PJ on youtube.
The last episode aired of season 5 was "Kate's Homecoming." The first two episodes of season 6 were "Birthplace of a Future President," and "The Singing Sweethearts." I believe these episodes were filmed RIGHT AFTER Kate's Homecoming, but did not air until season 6. In these episodes, all three girls hair is a little shorter, and Kate is still (pretty much) in most of the scenes. Everything changes by episode 3, "only a husband." The girls hair has obviously grown. Nothing unusual about filming a few episodes before hiatus, as I know other tv shows have done the same. The point I'm trying to make... It was SO OBVIOUS that Bea was going downhill fast. This was very hard for me to watch. She has the walk on scene that lasts for maybe 30 seconds. Though she looks okay in that scene, her absence in the rest of this episode is overpowering. Bobbie Jo says a few times "I'm going to tell mom," or "I'm going to let mom know." It must have taken tremendous strength for her to do even that tiny scene. I kept 'seeing' how well she would have done in this otherwise funny episode. Her usual 'mom' wisdom was very much missed.

It is so sad to watch an actor in a series as his or her illness progresses. The same "difference" can be noticed in the second season of Bewitched as Alice Pearce (Gladys) became painfully thin in her last few appearances on that series. Interestingly, the last episode of the second season of Bewitched featured Alice, but was obviously filmed much earlier as her performance is contained within a flashback to when Elizabeth Montgomery was still pregnant. Likewise, Larry Keating looked rather ill in his last Mister Ed episodes, filmed shortly before his 1963 death from Leukemia. In fact, he barely appears in "Leo Durocher Meets Mister Ed", his last show.

I sure wish Shout! Factory or CBS/Paramount would put season 3 of Petticoat Junction on DVD soon! I believe S3 was the first color season. I have seasons one and two on DVD and would like to get more season sets.

Basically--it's music rights. This is from a representative of Linda Henning (who doesn't like going on the computer).
