Heart Mary Ann & The Professor Chosen As One Of TV's Hottest Will They/Won't They Couples

MARY ANN (DAWN WELLS) AND THE PROFESSOR (RUSSELL JOHNSON)

Gilligan's Island (1964-1967)

No, we're not making this up. Didn't you ever watch the show? Those lustful stares they hoped no one but they could see. A casually messy pigtail; an undone button on the Professor's Oxford shirt. The only thing hotter than the vibes Mary Ann and the Professor were sharing was the tribal fire Gilligan was nearly cooked over in episode 4.18! Keep your Mad Men-style sexy; for real '60s heat, it's all about Gilligan's Island.

Erm, what?

Can we talk about the instances where they specifically said they weren't interested in each other? (The Matchmaker, The Postman Cometh).

Also, there's no episode 4.18 because there was no fourth season. Fail.

These lists are made by people who have never watched the show and just thought Russy was handsome. The end.

What the- ?? What lustful stares?? Are they watching the same show as I am?

Gilligan and Mary Ann. The Professor and Ginger. Those were Sherwood Schwartz's own intended pairings. Holy cow, how many more times do we have to say it!

I've got to be honest. I'm the only one here who sees what they mean. At the same time, lustful stares was taking it a bit too far. Do you think either of them knows how to give a lustful stare? And while I see their attraction/compatibility, I never noticed they had a Sam and Diane thing going on....

Whoever gave a 'lustful stare' in GI anyway? Maybe Ginger in season 1, oh, and Agent 222 in Gilligan vs. Gilligan. Rawr!!

To be fair, there are people who support the MAP pairing. In fanfiction, it tends to be women who place themselves in the role of Mary Ann because they are in love with the Professor. They don't support the canon pairings and tend to dislike Ginger and dismiss Gilligan as a fool unworthy of Mary Ann's affections.

However, getting back to the episodes, as JWood201 points out, in The Matchmaker, Mary Ann says she has nothing in common with the Professor, whereas in The Postman Cometh, the Professor says he has never shown the slightest romantic interest in Mary Ann. He supports her in Beauty Is As Beauty Does, but this is because Gilligan needed to be the judge, and speaking realistically, Gilligan would never push competitiveness because he plays fair and sees everyone as equal, and he's certainly not bothered by things like 'who's more beautiful than who'. (Or "whom", as Mrs. Howell might correct me!)

Then there's the matter of age. Mary Ann was meant to be a young girl. 19 in S1? Certainly no older than 21 or 22. The Professor is much older. If anything, she looks up to him because he's clever, and he feels protective towards her because she's young and eager. But as far as romance goes, it's wishful thinking.

Mind you, in the colour episodes it was wishful thinking even for MAG and GP fans as character development went out of the window in favour of cap-slapping and running around covered in feathers.

But then again, we did get epic dream sequences in which Gilligan's subconscious put Mary Ann in a French Maid's outfit! Could this be considered a lustful stare? Name: GilVitamins.jpg

I'm pretty sure that's about as close to a "lustful stare" as we ever got on that show.

I'm convinced that there used to be a smiley of the cartoon face with the eyes bugging out on stalks. I can't find it, so just pretend I put it here.

She SO did, especially in Season 1. It was so obvious.

These comments show an extremely high level of knowledge of GI. More importantly though, they are assigning "motives" to people who are writing fan fiction about the show that strike me as...bizarre?
