A story that singer Rufus Wainwright has been telling for years is getting a new life after being shared in an item in the Village Voice newspaper.

It involves that late television and Broadway star Bea Arthur, who died in 2009, and the time Wainwright met her at an AIDS benefit several years ago.

Rufus said to the star of the classic sitcoms Maude and The Golden Girls: 'I'm sorry to bother you, and I'm sure you hear this all the time, but I was going through a rough patch and Golden Girls brought me so much entertainment and comfort. It really helped me get through the bad spell. You're so wonderful. You made me feel like you're my grandmother.'

But there was no grandmotherly hug in return. Miss Arthur gently leaned into his ear and said: 'I'm not your ****ing grandmother.'

Then she walked away.

Below is a video of Wainwright sharing the story with a concert audience a few days after Miss Arthur's death at the age of 86. In addition to her Emmy winning television roles, she also won a Tony Award for her performance in the musical Mame on Broadway.

You know, it's interesting how much she got away with, because of the time she lived in. Now a days, every rude, uncalled for comment she made to people would be featured on Entertainment Tonight that evening, courtesy of social media. And rightly so, as far as I'm concerned.

Great actress. Not so stellar of a human being, in my viewpoint.
