Not really. Blu Ray would be great, it would digitally restore the look of the show like you never see it before.

Blu-Ray is overrated. I have some Blu-Ray and mostly standard DVD. For the old TV shows there is little difference and yes, I watch on a 40 inch flat screen LCD set, not an old cathode-ray tube set. Some shows, such as Mister Ed or The Flying Nun are so sharp on standard DVD, you can see flaws in the shows that you couldn't see on the original telecasts. On Mister Ed, you can see the nylon string used to prompt the horse to move his mouth in many scenes. You can also see the seams in the astro-turf lawn in front of the barn. On The Flying Nun, the wires used to make Sally Field fly are much more prominent than I ever noticed on the original telecasts. And these are standard-issue DVDs. On The Patty Duke Show, I can see make up covering a fever blister on Patty Duke's lips on one segment. On Dynasty, I noticed an exploded blood clot in John Forsythe's eye in an extended sequence. These are all things that I am sure the respective producers thought would never show up on the original telecasts.

I don't think Blu-ray is over-rated at all. While I have some amazing-looking DVDs, I can definitely see an improvement when I compare the same titles on DVD and Blu-ray (and I have terrible vision and am legally blind out of my right eye).

For example, I thought the 2002 Back to the Future trilogy DVDs looked just fine fine... until I bought the beautifully-mastered 2010 Blu-ray set. I thought the 2005 DVD of the 2K restoration of The Wizard of Oz was breathtaking; a revelation (and it was). Then I bought the 4K restoration Blu-ray done for the 70th anniversary in 2009, which blows even the 2005 DVD out of the water. There are lots of other examples I could cite, but I don't want to belabor my point.

Some people think Blu-ray is nothing more than a gimmick to get us all to buy our favorite movies all over again, but I can definitely tell the difference between upconverted "HD" and true 1080p.

I hope more classic TV series shot on film follow The Twilight Zone's lead in being remastered in HD (purely from a preservation standpoint) and being released on Blu-ray. I know I'd consider buying several shows from the '50s and '60s on the format.

For the record, I do my home media-viewing on a PS3 hooked up via HDMI to a 47" Sharp Aquos LCD.
