Oh No The former Ron Artest’s reformed image in doubt after throwing elbow

LOS ANGELES —

The Lakers jersey says World Peace on the back. The player wearing it is still Ron Artest, and he’s in trouble again with the NBA.

Metta World Peace was pounding his chest with his right arm in celebration of a dunk over two opponents Sunday when his left arm suddenly flew out, landing a vicious backward elbow to James Harden’s head and dropping the Oklahoma City guard to the hardwood.

Within seconds, the roars of the crowd fell silent as fans watched the latest act of violence by a player who changed his name last year to promote peace.

World Peace is likely to be sidelined when the Lakers open the postseason this weekend, and possibly longer. He claims he accidentally clipped Harden while celebrating a dunk, yet given his history as perhaps basketball’s most notorious troublemaker since Dennis Rodman, not even his teammates have any idea why he lost control for an inexplicable instant.

“It was unfortunate that James had to get hit with an unintentional elbow,” World Peace said. “I hope he’s OK.”

World Peace undid much of the goodwill created by his notable charity work over the past few years when he knocked Oklahoma City’s top reserve out of the key late-season game, giving him a concussion.

His upcoming suspension will be just a fraction of the 86-game ban Artest received in November 2004 when he jumped into the stands at the Palace of Auburn Hills to fight fans, precipitating perhaps the ugliest brawl in North American sports history.

Yet World Peace changed more than his name over the past three years with the Lakers. The former math major from St. John’s has devoted much of his free time to charity, even winning the NBA’s J. Walter Kennedy Citizenship Award last April, primarily for his work in mental health awareness.

“One play in the heat of a battle, all of the sudden it changes his perception as a man and as a person? No,” said teammate Kobe Bryant. “Everybody, all you guys, know what a sweet guy he is.”

While the NBA’s top brass watched video of the elbow and debated the length of a suspension Monday, sports fans debated whether to give Peace another chance. Some saw his actions as an ill-timed celebration that accidentally hurt a player, while others thought the Lakers forward should be suspended indefinitely, perhaps even banned from the NBA for a dangerous lack of impulse control.

“During that play, I just dunked on (Kevin) Durant and (Serge) Ibaka, and I got really emotional and excited,” World Peace said in a 30-second statement afterward, refusing to take questions in the Lakers’ locker room. “The Thunder, they’re playing for a championship this year, so I hope that he’s OK, and I apologize to the Thunder and to James Harden. You know, it was such a great game, and it was unfortunate so much emotion was going on at that time.”

The prolific tweeter gave a bit more insight about the elbow later that night.

“I just watched the replay again,” World Peace tweeted. “Oooo.. My celebration of the dunk really was too much... Didn’t even see James ..... Omg... Looks bad.”

No matter what the NBA does to World Peace, his rebuilt image has taken another blow. His actions also added a layer of irony to his decision to change his name, including a first name he claims is a traditional Buddhist term denoting kindness and friendliness.

Thumbs down

He is so full of it. Unintentional celebratory elbow, my foot. He's one angry man. The ugly look on his face when elbowed James Harden's head says it all, to me anyway. Harden is lucky that the bully didn't kill him.

Madderest

It's sickening - and it proves that this leopard hasn't and probably will never change his spots. I hope for Mr. Harden's sake that he won't suffer any serious, long-term effects from this cheap shot.

Ron Artest is nothing but a thug, he should of been kicked out of the NBA back in 2004.

Just found out he was suspended 7 games which I think was a bit much. But I think it had a lot to do with his reputation because a guy from Minnesota stepped on someone's face and he only was suspended 2 games.

So that means Artest has to hope the lakers go to a game 7 in the first round because if not he won't play until game 5 or 6 in round 2

I think he should have been tossed out of the league and charged with assault.

He said he didn't realize how bad it was until he looked at the video and was like..."Oh my that was horrible" lol

He plans to call harden to see if he is ok.

I'm going to give him a pass because of how good he has been since 2004

Who cares how good he's been since 2004. It's what just happened that's the important thing. He could have turned Harden into a vegetable or worse. Head injuries are no joke.

I agree, it was dangerous for a fast swinging elbow to go to the head area and he needed to be suspended. But I'm not going to say he should be banned from the league like some in the media are saying.

He got a 7 game suspension and he realized he made a horrible mistake and now he will learn from this and move on

Ron should be thrown outta the league because he's a ******. He's been in trouble too many times and he hasn't changed. I don't know why his dumb ass changed his name. That elbow was serious and James is lucky he's gonna be ok. I hope that incident doesn't cause him to have a head injury later on. Lakers are gonna lose to Denver because Denver has a lot of good players.

He was a key player on the 2010 squad and he was playing well up until that elbow. With that being said, the guy is certifiably insane and I can't stand him.
