What makes you say George and Diedre ever saw eye to eye? You could tell George got disgusted with her, but probably either was afraid to stand up to her, or didn't want to create waves. Of course, Dorothy would naturally feel defensive of Hazel, but probably was even more intimidated by Diedre.

As far as Steve goes, did Diedre even appear in the fifth season?

Yes, George did argue with Deidra, one time when Deidra wanted George to sell tickets he argued how little Deidra realizes how hard it is to sell them. Deidra then finds out. Another time when George was on Harry's side when he decided to finally leave. I'm sure there were others too, I'd have to go thru epis. guide to detail. Not that inclined.
