Sitcoms on Netflix - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

Netflix has a large streaming library, but they don't do a very good job of organizing it, so it's currently impossible to get a complete list of what's available. After the recent addition of Leave It to Beaver, I thought it would be nice to attempt to create a master list of all sitcoms that are currently available to stream instantly.

Are there any that I'm missing? I'd like to keep this thread updated as shows are added and deleted.

Great idea for a thread. However Upstairs, Downstairs is a British drama. So this means Netflix has NO sitcoms from the 70s for streaming? Really? None?

Netflix had a press release some months back (after a quarter with good profits) that they are focused on acquiring catalog TV shows for streaming. In reality they've let several notable licenses expire like Coach, Newsradio, Fawlty Towers and added virtually no more sitcoms. This is why I'm hanging onto my streaming+disc membership. Sadly, I imagine they'd rather acquire truckloads of reality garbage like Mall Cops: Mall of America as opiate for the asses instead of quality scripted shows.

I've found they don't have that many sitcoms in comparison to the many dramas they have.

I agree. It would be great to see shows like Taxi, All in the Family, The Mary Tyler Moore Show; etc. become available. I don't imagine any '70s sitcoms would be too terribly expensive to license, save for WKRP in Cincinnati with the original music.

I had a free trial of Hulu Plus in December, and noticed they had WKRP (with music substitutions), Mary Tyler Moore and The Bob Newhart Show. I'm not sure why Netflix can't get the rights to these shows, as well. Maybe Hulu has some sort of exclusivity deal with Fox for certain shows.

Yep. Not to mention The Cosby Show and Roseanne. I believe they also had Soap and Community for awhile, though that could be my memory playing tricks on me.

I don't know much about Netflix,but I was under the impression that they had a much wider variety of older programs than they seem to have.There was a thread a while back where the person who started the topic mentioned he was able to watch a lot of classic programs(including sitcoms) via Netflix even on his TV set.

Well, when you add DVDs and Blu-rays to the equation, Netflix essentially has any television series that has been released on home video since the advent of DVD. Unfortunately, their streaming selection, as of now, is rather limited, but for $8 a month, it's still not a bad deal.

Yes, you can view Netflix streaming titles on your TV (in great quality, too, barring a poor Internet connection) if you have a PS3, XBox 360, Wii, Apple TV, Roku, or several Wi-Fi enabled Blu-ray players. I watch on my PS3, and can stream certain titles in 720p HD.

I have Netflix streaming through my WDTV Live Plus via HDMI connection and the quality is fantastic considering my "average" internet connection. It's nearly DVD quality. The rest of their streaming library is actually pretty impressive, especially for classic cartoons and kids shows - their sitcoms are the only genre/format with a limited selection. So I think the streaming is still worth $8/month. And YES they did have Soap which I intended to watch but it was deleted before I ever got the chance.

I used to stream our Netflix over an HDMI connection but then I received Logitech's Google TV and Netflix streams over its application. It's really the only way I've watched TV since I've received it since it's so easy to use and has all my shows.

I really would like to own a smart TV one day, but I'm pretty cash-strapped for the time being. I'm holding out hope that Steve Jobs' TV becomes a reality.

It's unfortunate that the only sure way to see WKRP in Cincinnati as nature intended would be to go back to the day it premiered, and record all 90 episodes (including the hour-long Filthy Pictures and Dr. Fever and Mr. Tide episodes) from the night of the first broadcast airings.

Netflix gains and loses the rights to TV shows and movies each week. Sometimes they will have a show for years and then it will disappear for awhile and come back. For example, "Leave it To Beaver" was gone for about a year and it was recently readded in March. Sometimes a show will be gone for a weekend and pop back up on Monday. You just never know. I usually check out InstantWatcher.com for the expiration and upcoming release dates. According to them, "Leave it To Beaver" will be available until 2015.

Streaming is great, but if it's a show that you love and want to watch anytime, get the DVDs.
