Well, I know Sam prefers for it to be a man. lol
But, keeping in mind that Sam physically Leaps and so it is only the aura of that person that surrounds him- so that to the people of that time, he looks like that person but he is still physically himself. (Al and the viewers still see him as Sam.) - There are certainly some humor possibilities to see Sam dealing with life as a woman- and the first time he Leaped into a woman, in "What Price, Gloria?"- the episode really played up those angles. In later episodes where he Leaps into a woman, it's not as big of a deal (though Sam never likes it, for obvious reasons)- and he's able to get inside insight into important issues that women have faced- like tackling the Women's Liberation movement in the "Liberation" episode- not to mention outright sexism and sexual harrassment in the "What Price, Gloria?" and "Dr. Ruth" episodes. Of course, not every episode where he Leaps into a woman is like that. There are some where he Leaps into a woman because she is the best person to help effect change in the life of the person Sam has been sent to help- particularly in the case of "Another Mother" episode- though Sam also gets to experience the life of a single mother, trying to take care of a house and raise kids and keep a job. And of course, the most famous episode for Sam experiencing what's it like for single mothers- "8 1/2 Months", where he Leaps into a 16-year-old girl who's pregnant. Sam also deals with a sad situation that happens so many times in a powerful episode called "Raped" where he Leaps into a teenage girl who's been raped. And in "A Song for the Soul", he Leaps into a black teenage girl who is part of an all-girls band and helps keep the lead singer from a shady nightclub owner. I don't know that I prefer Sam to Leap into any particular gender, male or female. As for comedic moments, those happen in most all the episodes, as it is just as interesting to see Sam Leap into males who have very different lives from him, so Sam has different roles to play. Two of Sam's least pleasant I would daresay would be as a male stripper in "Private Dancer" and a glam rock star in "Glitter Rock". But no matter whether what gender or what race or what ethnicity, etc. they are all real people with real problems that Sam helps deal with- and they are all important and valuable, as all people are made in God's image. So I think it's great to see the show promote that value- that all people are valuable and worth saving. God certainly thinks so- that's why He sent Christ to die on the cross and rise again to give us all salvation.
