It seems I read once a long time ago he was considered for the Gavin McLeod role, but Van Patten backed out. I know he was on several episodes, but was curious.

TV Guy Member Forum 3000 Club Member Join Date: Jun 25, 2001 Location: Boston, MA, USA Posts: 3,419	Not the captain, but the ship's doctor. Dick Van Patten actually did appear in the first "Love Boat" pilot movie as the doctor (but not Dr. Bricker).
