TV On This Date In 1979: 'All In The Family' Aired Its Last Episode

April 8th, 1979 - The last episode of "All In The Family" aired.

In September 1979, a new show, Archie Bunker's Place, picked up where All in the Family had ended. This sitcom lasted another four years, ending its run in 1983.

I always wondered why the show stopped being number 1 after 1975. I mean where did all of the fan base go?-lol

It's not like Mike and Gloria wasn't still on the show from 1975 to 1978-lol

I forget if Edith died in All In the Family or in Archie Bunker's Place.

That was a really sad episode. I remember Archie sitting on their bed upstairs and crying all alone. I felt so bad for him. At least he still had Stephanie.

The Vietnam War ended, and people wanted less social commentary in their sitcoms, which they got with the likes of All In The Family and Maude, and more carefree, innocent humour, which was found in Happy Days and Laverne & Shirley.

Also, I'm pretty sure Gloria, Mike and Joey moving next door would have lost All In The Family viewers. In my opinion, the best years of All In The Family were Seasons 2-5, when Archie, Edith, Gloria and Mike were all living under the one roof.

But even though they were living next door they were still seen in every episode. It wasn't like they became the Jeffersons and was more like neighbors and only seen sometimes.

Good point, although you did have a reasonable number of episodes with one or more of the four absent from this point on, indeed, there are some episodes with only Archie and Edith, and some with only Mike and Gloria.
