Where I live (known as the "Chico/Redding" market), only two stations broadcast syndicated programming in high definition: the co-owned CBS and NBC stations. The other stations show only network programming HD; everything else is in standard defintion. It is unknown when they will be able to acquire the equipment that will allow them to air syndicated and local programming in HD.
I tend to stay away from the non-HD shows. They frustrate me, because I know they're being produced and distributed in HD (and air that way in most of the country), but are only available in ugly, downconverted SD here. A lot of the sitcoms that air on my Fox station (Family Guy, Two and a Half Men, The Big Bang Theory and How I Met Your Mother) are available on cable in HD, anyway. I just wonder how many viewers local stations across the country are losing to cable or competing stations because they won't or can't upgrade their syndicated shows to HD. |
