Confused Was 'Fantasy Island' Really One Of The Worst Dramas Of All Time???

Cast
Ricardo Montalban – Mr. Roarke
Hervé Villechaize – Tattoo

Plot
Fantasy Island was a magical location where people paid to have their fantasies fulfilled by island leader Mr. Roarke (played by Ricardo Montalban) and his petite sidekick Tattoo (Herve Villechaize). Think “The Love Boat” – only on land.

Why it’s on the list
Yep, we all know Tattoo’s catchphrase: “De plane! De plane!” – but what about the rest of the show? Anyone else totally creeped out by Mr. Roarke and Tattoo’s white suits? Mr. Roarke was truly magical, but boy did this show suck. And damn the producers – they fired Villechaize before the final season! Asses.

The worst show ever?

First of all, this was the 1970's. I have not seen this show in decades. The show started out as a television movie and then a sequel in 1977. The show debuted in 1978 and stayed on until 1984)

The 1970's was a strange era and Fantasy Island was very much part of that time. It is difficult for me to pinpoint what it was that made this show "so 70's", only someone who lived the 1970's could understand. Maybe a different sense of humor, with loud clothes. Maybe some dialogue which was appropraite in that era would not be so in the politically correct 2010's.

If I remember, this show came on after The Love Boat. Both shows featured "guest stars" who were mostly television actors of the era and older former movie stars doing the show for extra money and something to do. A few of these actors, (like Michelle Pfeiffer) were young up and comers.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fantasy_Island (with list of guest stars).

This was an Aaron Spelling show. Personally, I thought anything that Spelling put out was crap, but many people liked his shows. I think you either like his work or avoid it like the plague.

this definitely wasn't one of the worst dramas of all time - it may not be everyone's cup of tea, but it certainly had some good moments.

that "review" makes it sound like the "reviewer" has never actually seen the show, just formed an opinion based on the Wikipedia article or something.

He gives no real reason why 'it sucked', does he?

He's creeped out by the suits? That's a reason? Meh.

I wish I could get paid to write brainless, ill-informed 'reviews' like this one; I'd be one of seemingly thousands of such slopebrows on the Internet. Check that; I'd rather stay poor than get paid to write pap like this.

Fantasy Island was a good show. I never watched it every week but when I did, I was entertained.

Yeah, me too. It's an example of comic book adaptation where they really changed the story a lot from the comic and yet it still worked very well. I sure miss Bill Bixby.

I use to watch this show when I was a kid and I guess I enjoyed it because I kept watching it till the end when Mr. Belvadere came in and took over for Tattoo.

Watching the episodes again I have to say the show really does suck, mostly. It should have been titled "Sex Fantasy" Island because that is mostly what these stories are about and Tattoo and the real actor who played him seem to have nothing else on their minds but sex with the pretty girls.

The actresses, a good number of them, act out their roles in bikinis. Must be quite an acting challenge acting in a bikini throughout filming. Spanish novellas seem to have taken that style of acting to heart now-a-days. One of the actresses at the start of the show has on some type of jumpsuit and it is zipped down so far it's like she's saying "Hey, lookie what I got down here". She walks around like this throughout the show and wonders why some mute wants to rape her.

Tattoo acts like a sex-crazed midget, which the actor seems to have been in real life according to what is written about him. Call it jealousy, but watching a midget trying to get it on with a tall beautiful woman and her responding is beyond belief, but I guess money buys anything.

It's actually a pretty creepy show now-a-days and like I said, I use to watch it when it was originally aired.

The only one that seems to have any class is Ricardo Montalban, but when you see the type of fantasies he allows, he seems nothing better than a pimp with mystical powers.

The show hasn't aged well at all, but that's true of over 95% of tv shows and movies.

The reason Villichez was fired was because he was bringing loaded automatic weapons to the set and waving them around and doing LOTS of cocaine and locking himself in his trailer all day. I don;t know what show Larn Conner is talking about but it sure as hell isn't Fantasy Island.

The show was alright IMO. About a 6 on my scale. I did enjoy it sometimes. I believe it was on originally Saturday nights. at 10pm L.A. Time, where i lived then. I was mostly interested in The Love Boat that was on before Fantasy Island. But I would stay to watch FI as well. It must have done okay enough in the ratings. It ran 7 seasons.

There was only 1 thing that bothered me about the show. Herve Villechaize (Tattoo) He just got on my nerves. Like a little puppy dog following Mr. Roarke around asking questions all the time.

The show was so associated with Montalban and Herve that I didn't know little Tattoo was replaced in its last season, ..........and by Mr. Belvedere?

I don't know how odd that is, I mean, I would've gotten it on with him. **shrugs**

Maybe I'm a bit biased, but Tattoo was the best part!

I've never heard that story before! I always had heard he was fired over a salary dispute. But, heck if the weapons/cocaine story is true, then it's just more proof I love my guys with a side of danger.
