Was Lou Grant the role of a lifetime?
"Yes, it was. I was able to parlay it for a few years. I will always be grateful to the people who created him and to the idea of the man himself, whom I respect enormously."

On what he remembers most about The Mary Tyler Moore Show.
"I realized that we were a show of ideas, which is not common on television. I knew we were a smash, of course, as a comedic show because of the brilliant writing, but once we got into Lou Grant, the drama spin-off, it was very hard work, but I just took great pride in the ideas that we were espousing."
