Confused Did 'Maude' Succeed As A Character Because Of Bea Arthur's Misery?

Was the character of Maude so close to the real Bea Arthur? Why was she so hateful at times? I mean how could you hate Betty White? I guess we may never know, but was Bea Arthur more like Maude or Dorothy from Golden Girls?

First let me say that I love Bea Arthur as an actress. She did fantastic work in both Maude and Golden Girls. I've heard in various interviews that Bea and Maude weren't really that much alike. Credit to Bea as an actress to make the audience think she was Maude! Bea is probably more like Dorothy Spornak on Golden Girls. I love both shows.

Actually, Bea Arthur was not that much like the character of Maude. I just finished watching a 2008 interview of her on youtube.com where she plainly states that she was not a feminist or activist. You can see the interview by simply typing in "Bea Arthur" on the youtube search box. It's the 6:12 interview in 2008. Bea is wearing a black blouse. She was just such a good actress that the audience thought she was Maude!

Not sure how TRUE those reports are that Bea HATED Betty White. Bea could be abrasive with people, I heard that many times. I think it was her style. But sometimes, people have different ways of showing affection and dislike for people.

If Betty White was anything close to her Golden Girls character then I can believe it

Well, Betty also mentioned it in an interview that Bea did not like her. Betty, however, still praised Bea for her great work in TV. Do a search on You Tube because its there.

Bea was a lovely woman and as Golden as could be however from what I read, she could be a mean son of a bisquit. That is a side of her that I could have done without. She may be a legend and all but if she was mean, then she was just mean. It is what it is. I still love her, though.
