TV Today in Brady History: The Bunch Aired Its Final Episode Without Its Patriarch

March 8th, 1974 - The last episode "The Brady Bunch" aired

"The Hair-Brained Scheme"

Bobby is convinced he can get rich by selling Neat & Natural Hair Tonic. Bobby sells Greg a container which turns Greg's hair bright orange on the eve of his high school commencement. Greg is forced to go to the beauty parlor and dye his hair back before going to graduation.

Note: Robert Reed does not appear in this episode, due to dispute over the story involving the non-FDA approved bottle of hair tonic, which he thought was inane slapstick. After Reed wrote a large memo to the staff and Paramount, Sherwood Schwartz wrote him out of the episode.

Red face

I thought Robert Reed wanted out of the episode to begin with!

Kind of, he was trying to blackmail Schwartz into changing the plot. It backfired on him.

Eek The Final Words of the Final Ep- Freaky!

Not only was this ep sans Patriarch but it also had some of the most ironic final words on any TV program.
"Me! Cousin Oliver!"

Gilligan's Island (Schwartz's other show) never had a final episode either. He must not have liked saying goodbye.

All because of a old junkman-lol

BTW: This episode scared me when I first watched it has a child. It had something to do with the way Greg was chasing bobby around with that strange color hair ll

I liked this ep too! And when Greg wore the ski cap to the beauty salon, that was funny too! And the rabbits turning orange (hopefully it really didn't hurt the bunnies) !!

It was a little sad that it had to be the last ep that Robert Reed didn't participate in. Esp. when it was supposed to be his oldest sons graduation and Mike had to miss it!

They just played this ep I think last Sunday on the Brady brunch, than right after the pilot marriage ep. Funny seeing the last ep, them so grown up and than seeing them all as little kids again!!!

And, had the show been renewed for a sixth season, it's very possible that the show would have gone on without Mike Brady.

It was being planned that Mike would be killed and that Carol would be a widow. The Schwartzes were tired of Robert Reed's attitude and were strongly considering a Brady Bunch without a father.

I'm glad it ended when it did than! I don't like the idea of Mike Brady passing! Carol already lost one husband. ( He died right? She wasn't divorced I don't think.) No, I think that would be entirely too sad if Mike died. And the kids my gosh, those boys losing a mother than their father too, and the girls loved Mike like their own biological father too! If the show were to go on without Robert Reed, I would rather have a new actor come in and play Mr. Brady. But than IDK about that either. We all knew and loved Robert Reed's Mike Brady so much. who could have filled his shoes? So I'm thinking it was a good thing the show came to an end.

I haven't read or heard anywhere that Carol was divorced but I'm 100% positive she wasn't. Divorce was too hot a topic for TV in 1969 when the show started.

(they originally wanted to make Mary a divorcee on THE MARY TYLER MOORE SHOW in 1970, but didn't for that reason)
