Least liked Minor Characters on "Hazel" - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

And no,I DO NOT mean George's(and later on,Steve's)uppity sister Deidre.Anyway,one of my least liked minor characters on "Hazel",was in the NBC color episode (what season was the episode I'm referring to in?)-the very uppity (even more so than Deidre)assistant to Hazel's sister(the late Rosemary De Camp)who wanted Hazel to come to her wedding,but the female assistant didn't.I will not spoil the ending.

Another minor character who wasn't at all likable,was that guy who was George's cousin Gracie's boss,whom Hazel and Gracie thought was a gangster when Hazel went to visit Gracie who was working for gangsters ,in the very good NBC 2-part color episode (which season was it from,by the way?)"Scheherezade and her Frying Pan".Anyway,the very mean guy who was Gracie's boss WASN'T a gangster at all.

Miss Scott the snooty reporter on Seasons 2 "Maid of the Month....Mrs Kingsley Williams overbearing mother on Seasons 1 "Three Little Cubs", and to a lesser extent the briefly shown Miss Madeleine ? ( the snoty Scrabble player) on Seasons 1 "Number,Please?"......They all were essentially the same uppity,unlikeable characters as the secretary on Hazels Cousin

A couple notes. Actually the boss that Gracie worked for WAS a gangster head, it was his stooge assistant (the guy who looked mean) who turned out to be an FBI guy.

And yes the reporter lady who put Hazel down who was supposed to write a magazine article on Hazel was I think the most despicable character. She intentionally tried to make Hazel feel like nothing. But Miss Scott was the name of Mr. B's secretary, I don't remember if this reporter woman shared the same name or not, but I do know the normal Miss Scott was Mr. B's secretary.

The 2 gossiping bittys in the b/w episode at the Winter resort/spa that Hazel visited were also remarkably cruel and mean.

I also really disliked the uppity woman who Hazel had a run-in with as they each tried to park in the same spot with their cars. She was rude and a liar to boot. Her husband whom Hazel mistook (is that a word?) to be a chaufeur turned out to be a nice guy. I've always wondered why he would stay married to a woman like that. Same thought occured to me with the man who didn't want his wife to go to the fashion show because his overweight wife would want the skinny girl clothes. Maybe it's just me, but I don't see how either of these guys could stay married to such women.

Another least-liked minor character was in the second season episode "A Good Example for Harold",that sorta rude Mr.Boyle,a prospective client of George's,who manufactured some worthless stuff called "Scour No More",and luckily (thanks to Hazel )saw the error of his ways.A not bad episode.

Mr. Boyle was played by Phil Ober, who was Vivian Vance's then ex-husband. From what I read, he seems to have had a huge ego and an inflated sense of his value as an actor. (He supposedly hid Vivian's Emmy from view in their home). He appeared in the 1959 film The Angry Red Planet and appeared in one other episode of Hazel (that I am aware of). His most well-known appearances would be in the 1955 I Love Lucy episode where he played MGM chief Dore Schary, and in the 1965 pilot episode of I Dream Of Jeannie, where he played Tony Nelson's Fiancee's Father, General Stone. In 1958, when Desilu was preparing the series Guestward Ho! to star Vivian Vance, Phil strongly campaigned to play opposite his wife in the pilot, but lost out to Leif Erickson. That series finally hit the air in 1960 with Joanne Dru and Mark Miller in the leads and lasted but one season.

Isn't Phil Ober the guy who played a rich client who arrived at the Baxter house with his wife for a dinner BUT on the wrong night. He tore his pants on the path to the house outside, Hazel fixed the pants, Smiley ate his wife's earring. I don't remember the name of this episode but I remember the plot and I can see this guy in my mind, I believe he was Phil Ober. Am I right?

ANOTHER not very likable character (who wasn'tr human,but a dog-now don't get ne wrong.I love dogs ,but this one was spoiled beyond belief),was the spoiled dog of Mr.B's rich client.Which episode was this from,and in which season was it?A good episode.

That dog was "Rodney" with the ugly face and sloppy sneezes. Wittle Wodney as his uppity owner lady called him. Did Hazel ever show anyone who wasn't uppity unless they were a domestic?

The other Phil Ober episode was "Pot Luck Ala Mode" just as you described it. The first episode of the third season. The "Rodney" episode, from season 4 was, I believe, "It's A Dog's World". This one featured the marvelous Lee Patrick as Mrs. Durham, Rodney's "Mother": "Momsie feels so sorry for baby!" followed by a loud sneeze by the spoiled pooch. Lee Patrick, for those old enough to remember, was Mrs. Topper in the Topper television series and Mrs. Upson in the classic 1958 Auntie Mame with Rosalind Russell, one of my all-time favorite movies.

I didn't know that about "Mrs. Durham" and her history in movies & TV. I remember she also played the, once again, uppity wife who was driving a Rolls and she and Hazel almost got into a collision fighting over a parking space. She & Hazel clashed and "Mrs. Durham" (though not her name in this episode) wound up running over a board and nails which conveniently happened to be in the parking space she wanted. She was especially vile in this episode esp. to Hazel. Yes she and her dog were both "least liked" characters.

It does sometimes seem a stretch to name characters in Hazel who were not "uppity'' towards her. Here is my partial list: Edith Stone (I think the name is correct), the publisher of Mode Magazine who arranged for Hazel to visit the health spa. Gabe Fairchild, the famous artist who agreed to see Hazel's foster child in Italy when Deirdre refused. The very wealthy Johnsons, who adored Hazel. George Baxter's mother, who schemed with Hazel to begin a gardening business unbeknownst to Deirdre. Mr. Griffin, who after their initial clash in an early episode even proposed to her. Cousin Sybil's fiancee who convinced Hazel that she was wanted at her cousin's wedding. I'll be damned if I can come up with more. Come on guys! You can help me come up with more than this!

Harry Thompson,Deirdre's husband was always pleasant toward Hazel(unlike his wife). He even wanted to go visit her in the kitchen in Season 5's "Kindly Advise" until Deirdre stopped him. Mrs Rita Knoll, Harry Knoll's wife was also very fond of Hazel. Mr. Egan "Ain't that a Knee Slapper" also liked Hazel. He was essentially competing with Mr Griffin for Hazel's adoration.
