Although I'm a fan of both, I had to go with Gidget...!

Comparing the shows, in my opinion The Flying Nun is by far the better of the two. When comparing Gidget to The Patty Duke Show, the only thing Gidget has going for it is that it's in color, but Patty Duke is a much better show despite the lack of color as it was filmed in black and white.

The Flying Nun and Patty Duke were on for three seasons, Gidget lasted just one season so judging by longevity Flying Nun and Patty Duke are also the better shows. I'm aware that Gidget started gathering more of an audience during the summer repeats, but it was a case of too little too late, and the show was deservedly pulled after one failed season.

I somewhat wished I was Gidget. To go to beach, have a best friend you could pal around with and a have a sister. On the other hand not having a mom could have been sad.

I enjoyed watching Gidget quite a bit more than The Flying Nun even though I did like both shows. I wish there had been more than one season of it.

I haven't seen the Flying Nun all that much. Any stations showing it?
I look back at seeing shows I saw as a child and some don't hold me like they use to. Saw Lost in Space one night and it just didn't have the same zip. At times I wish I had a child who see the shows as I saw then as a child.
Life goes too fast.

Gidget was a much better show and was starting to improve in the ratings but the morons at ABC had already cancelled it and back then they didn't change their minds once they pulled the plug on a show. Should have lasted much longer. Flying Nun was silly.

A Flying Nun may be a silly concept for a sitcom, but that's the only thing silly about it, the episodes are good despite the flying gimmick. The series is also pleasing to watch because it was attractively filmed and has a great locale, along with one of the better theme songs from 1960's sitcoms. To me, Gidget is bland teenage fluff, episodes not well written. The Patty Duke Show does it much better.

I don't remember Gidget ever being rerun in the '70s on any NYC station. I did enjoy Flying Nun many summer and holiday afternoons, though. On the other hand, whenever the 4:30 Movie ran a Gidget week, I always looked forward to seeing cute Deborah Walley in Gidget Goes Hawaiian and to a lesser extent, Karen Valentine in Gidget Grows Up.
