Dawn Wells Wasn't Really A Fan Of The "Gilligan" TV Movies

Dawn Wells just did an interview on Good Day NY promoting her Broadway play, "Love Loss and What I Wore" and after talking about the play, came a bunch of questions about 'Gilligan's Island.' Pretty standard stuff, but the one question and answer I found interesting was her talking about the TV movies from the 70's. She apparently was no fan of those reunion movies. She basically said, "90 minutes of Gilligan's Island is about 60 minutes too much. It was much better in small doses."

I've heard her say that before and I agree with her. The movies weren't very well written, I think. I love the original series more than any other show in existence, but 90 minutes of trying to drag out the same comedy plot just doesn't work. From a writer's/actor's standpoint, I agree with her and I prefer to pretend the movies don't exist.

If they make the new movie, they need to add much more depth to it. I'm not saying it has to be dark or "modern" and not innocent and funny, but there needs to be a more concrete story to keep people in their seats for 90 minutes. Backstory, the shipwreck, character development, etc etc.

90 minutes of episodes isn't too much. When I first got my DVDs I watched 20 episodes in one day. (Actually, that does seem a tad excessive...maybe it was only 15 or so.)

When you watch the GI movies, you realise just how subtle the series actually was. It was meticulously planned and choreographed and tightly scripted and edited. The movies, on the other hand, are pure 70s schlock. Like a giant free-for-all in a marshmallow factory.

That makes no sense.
