I could've sworn Maude appeared in more than one episode of All in the Family. I guess not. With that said, was it Norman Lear's intention to always create a show around a reverse Archie Bunker or was it just a freak occurrence?

She appeared in two eps of AITF. The one when the Bunkers are sick and the other one when Archie and Edith go visit Maude in Upstate NY |

So in essence, Maude was always going to get a spin-off regardless of how the viewers felt about her?

The feedback CBS received after her first appearance made Norman Lear decided to create a spinoff |

Ok, so that's different then....Maude was a character that exploded in popularity after a guest spot. |

No.Beatrice Arthur was just only suppose to be a One Time Guest Star, She was very popular with CBS and got lot of positive feedback. After That Airing of 'Cousin Maude Visit' Norman Lear got a call form a CBS Executive and apparently Told Laar about Arthur "She is going to be a star' Will He was right about that! He then told Norman that he needed to give Arthur her own spin-off and the rest s history. They then brought her back at the end of the season 2 to launch her spin-off.
From the book of The Sitcoms of Norman Lear: Who is that Girl? Executives wondered with their Jaws down t the floor in amusement" on that Taping day Lear told Yorkins that 'This Women is a show!' And CBS agreed. |
