While not a “spin-off”, the suits at ABC got tired of fighting with Roseanne Barr and the s2 ep (“An Officer and a Gentleman”) where she leaves town to help out with her father’s broken hip, leaving Jackie to help Dan with the kids was meant to try out how the show would work with John and Laurie and without the titular star, much like NBC did to Valerie Harper on her show (eventually becoming The Hogans). When the cast realized what was up after filming, they banded together and there /was/ a firing, but it wasn’t a cast member!
