Confused Why Was The Jackee '227' Spinoff NOT Picked Up If It Was Ranked 5th in the Ratings???

Jackee

Relations between Marla Gibbs and Jackie Harry were rather tense by the fourth season of 227, mainly because Jackee’s character, Sandra, had become the breakout star of the series. Harry filmed a pilot which aired in 1989 in which Sandra moved to New York to accept a job at a film studio. When it turned out that the studio in question made adult films, she instead took a job at a spa. The pilot had a plum slot right after The Cosby Show and finished fifth in the ratings, but NBC still declined to pick it up.

I read that Jackee was grateful that the show did not get picked up. I know that some did not like the show after Jackee left but the show was till good to me. You still had a lot of good characters to work with and were funny. I taped the pilot ep when it aired but threw it out. LOL. Oops! However, retrieved another ep by someone (who will remain nameless. LOL.) The show was ok. I wanted to see how Sandra would adapt weekly out of her 22 environment.

Mostly all actors are happy when they don't get a spinoff for some reason. Charlotte Rae of Diff'rent Strokes didn't want one and neither did The Ropers. It just baffles me that if the show was a top 10 rating, why scrap it? I know it was cushioned with the Cosby Show, but still, it just does not make any sense to me.

I'm wondering if NBC lacked faith that show would have made it. If it had made it, it would have had the "Flo" syndrome. Iconic character has issues with the lead and moves off to her own piece and out of the hair of the lead. I loved Marla and I thought she seemed reasonable, though.

The ratings for Jackee was irrelevant since NBC only aired one episode-lol The person acted like Jackee was aired for 6 weeks. By the way I have the first NBC episode on tape somewhere because I recieved a copy from someone lol

Granted Sol, it was one episode, but it did really well. Why not continue with the project then?

I know. However, for some reason, NBC said no. It was a blessing for Jackee, though.

Perhaps, but who knows what might have been. I guess I see your point though, because if Jackee was a hit, then she probably would have been type cast as the Sandra character forever. lol

Maybe because they didn't want to take a chance on 227 falling in the ratings?

I see what you are saying, but that would mean that NBC thought very highly of Jackee and the Sandra character. So, it still doesn't make that much sense. A tv mystery indeed. lol

Just saw that Sandra was not seen that much in season 5 at all, so I can see that season of 227 was unwatchable
