Hey guys, last year, Password turned 50 years old
and so, I would like to know this: On a Scale of 1-10 how do you rank the hosts of Password? and here they are: The Late Allen Ludden (Mr. Password Himself) The Late Bill Cullen (The Dean of Game Shows) Tom Kennedy (Password Plus and Body Language) The Late Bert Convy (Super Password and TattleTales) Regis Philbin (Million Dollar Password and Who Wants to be a Millionaire?) Please share your thoughts on all of them |

Allen Ludden, without any hesitation gets a 10 for hosting Password. He was the perfect host for the show and it made his career more successful. Tom Kennedy had a tough act to follow after Ludden stepped down but he did a wonderful job which earned him an 8. Bill Cullen did really well as a fill-in, despite his limited mobility. The best game show host of all-time gets a 9. Jack Narz gets an incomplete since he did part of one show where he switched spots with his brother. As for Bert Convy, he brought his own style and humor to the classic word game. He also gets an 8.
Last is Regis Philbin on "Million Dollar Password". Although the show wasn't as good as the previous incarnations, he didn't do a bad job as host. I'll give him a 7. |

When I 1st saw Allen Ludden, I used to think he came off as this over-proper guy who was a stiff but after awhile He grew on me (in a good way) and he showed why he deserved to be Mr. Password. He was fantastic on the original CBS PW and on the pre-All-Stars ABC Password as on P+, he really seemed excited to be back hosting P+ judging from the very early eps.
10 all the way! Bill Cullen in spite of his limited mobility did a capable job of filling in for Mr. Ludden during the short time he sub-hosted. 9. Tom Kennedy at first seemed very unsure of himself when he 1st took over for Allen, especially given that he wanted to be billed as "the host" of P+ (which is very understandable out of respect for his friend) as opposed to "star of P+" (like he eventually became towards the very tail end of the run) but as the run went on he hosted with more confidence despite the lagging maingame (albeit w/ a growing jackpot) when they switched the scoring from $300 to $500 for a match win and he overall did a good job of hosting without trying to "be" Allen. 8. Bert Convy brought in his own style of hosting to the Password game although and made it into his own fun atmosphere and was the 1st version of any PW I've seen before GSN came along. 8 as well. Regis did a passable to good job hosting MDP but the convulated format "Lightning Round" from the CBS and ABC-eras on steroids for the maingame and the "Ca$hword" from SP on steroids and time for the endgame left him very little room for him to ad-lib the way he did on Millionaire and I hated the way they had the audience clapping after someone got a single word right in both the main and endgames and Regis's pre-taped voiceovers popping up out of nowhere during the maingame and endgames (i.e. "You have to be perfect from now on" in the endgame when someone was in danger of losing the endgame) gotten annoying at times as well. 6-7 here. |
