NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell May End The Pro Bowl

The Pro Bowl's status has fallen so far after its latest edition that NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said during a radio interview Sunday he is considering eliminating the game.

After last Sunday's 59-41 victory by the AFC was roundly criticized for its sloppy play, including a booing crowd upset by a seeming lack of effort from the players, Goodell told ESPN radio's "Mike and Mike in the Morning" he had heard the complaints loud and clear.


"I really didn't think that was the kind of football that we want to be demonstrating for our fans," he said. "And you heard it from the fans. The fans were actively booing in the stands. They didn't like what they were seeing.

"We're either going to have to improve the quality of what we're doing in the Pro Bowl or consider other changes, or even (consider) eliminating the game, if that's the kind of quality game we're going to provide."

Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers, who played in the first quarter, said earlier this week he was surprised by the players' lack of interest and effort and felt some "embarrassed themselves," though he did not reveal specific names.

Goodell indicated a change in venue could be in the works, rather than the lush tropical playground of Hawaii. He told the station he had discussed potential changes with NFL Players Association executive director DeMaurice Smith.

"I know players love to be in Hawaii, but we have to start with the quality of what we're doing," Goodell said. "If the fans are responding negatively to what we're doing, we (had) better listen."

Why the hell do they play the pro bowl so close to the Superbowl anyway? Makes absolutely no sense. I tried watching once, and felt like I was watching the XFL or something, minus the skanky stripper cheerleaders. (That probably would have improved the experience actually lol) The NBA All star Game and it's festivities are awesome, as are baseball's, but you couldn't pay me to watch the pro bowl. I'm not with Goodell on much, but I'm with him here. He should have done this 20 years ago.

Both baseball and basketball are non-contact sports, so having an all-star game is easier than it is for football, a contact sport.

Also, Goodell couldn't have done this 20 years ago, since he wasn't the commisioner then.

Yes, I know Goodell wasn't commissioner then, what I meant was that this should have been done 20 or more years ago regardless of who was in charge, since the Pro Bowl has always sucked. Good point on the differences though. Thanks!
