Colorized first season - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

I recall from watching reruns as a boy that the first season of this show was colorized for syndication. However, the official DVD is in the original black and white. Does anyone know of any color bootlegs? This show clearly looks much better in color, IMO.

I remember the color reruns too. For years I thought Mary Ann had a blue gingham dress in addition to her red one because they colorized it as blue. o.O

You might be able to see them if someone put an episode on YouTube or something... The colorized ones were still really pale, there are some screencaps around the Internet, not bright and colorful like the episodes actually filmed in color.

Turner colorized the first season in the early 90s when they ran on TBS and TNT. I believe I have all be one episode of the colorized episodes. I perefer the original, but it is still fun to have both. Jeannie and Bewitched had there colorized episodes released on DVD, it would have been cool if Warner did both, but oh well

I saw the colorized first season on the Turner channel in the early 90's and it was dreadful. The water in the lagoon was black, as was the Skipper's shirt. The backgrounds were not always fully colored. In short, this was a prime example of early colorization. When "Bewitched's" first b/w shows were presented in color about 7 years ago, the difference in the intervening years was remarkable. There have been many strides forward in colorization in these years, and these episodes, along with the first b/w "I Dream of Jeannie" episodes look great. If they could redo the GI shows in a similar fashion, that would be worthwhile. In the meantime, the current prints in b/w of Gilligan's first season look terrific and sharp, like they were filmed last week, much better than the old Turner jobs in erzatz color.

I don't believe in this colorization, if a movie or TV show was originally made in black and white, that is how it's meant to be seen. I agree that Gilligan's Island looks better in color, but that first season filmed in black and white should stay as black and white, that's how it's meant to be seen. Same thing with the first two seasons of Bewitched and the first season of I Dream Of Jeannie. Those were also filmed in black and white, and that is how they're intended to be seen.

I thought the same thing until I saw what a great job modern technology can do with colourisation now.

I was dead set against faux color until I saw an episode of Bewitched and couldn't believe my eyes. As for I Dream of Jeannie, Sidney Sheldon wanted to film in color and even offered to pay the $400 per episode difference to do so, but NBC had so little faith in the show they told him to save his money as they were certain the show would never last past one season. Thus, I Dream of Jeannie was one of two prime-time shows presented in black-and-white on NBC, which would next season switch all their prime time shows to color.

Black & White movies and TV shows have a unique mood and atmosphere, adding color to the picture destroys the mood and ruins the viewing experience. That's why I am against colorization, to me it doesn't matter how far the technology has advanced, I consider colorizing black and white as an act of vandalism.

Back in the 1980's I used to know a guy, I think he was about 25 at the time, maybe a little younger, and he told me he could not watch anything made in black and white, trying to watch a black and white movie or TV show gave him headaches and made him physically ill. I told him he was a loon and needed psychoanalysis.

There are also some people who despise black and white, they will refuse to watch anything made in black and white without even giving it a chance. My response to that is these people are losing out on some great classic entertainment.

Absolutely agree with everything you say, including your friend needing psychoanalysis

I love S1 of Gilligan's Island in black and white, I wouldn't want to watch it colourised, except maybe out of curiosity.

My thoughts in a nutshell, it would be like taking a 1970s-1990s videotaped show and making it high definition. Haven't seen the colourized B&W episodes of Bewitched, so I can't comment on those.

I totally agree! I also recall the colorized S1 of GI and that's how it should've been released on DVD! Looks a lot better than stale black and white!

Seriously The colorized is fun for a novelty but how can you perfer it to the original.

Our eyes see a full spectrum of colors so why limit yourself to just 2?

You only get one more color with the GI colorization episodes, brown, maybe a little blue too.

I remember seeing those on TBS and I recall more colors than that. Even if it was 4 or 5 colors that's better than only 2!
